Substitute TK Teacher Assistant (Transitional Kindergarten)

The Opportunity

Vista Unified School District needs warm, dependable aides for its Transitional Kindergarten (TK) classrooms. TK is the first year of school for many 4- and 5-year-olds, and teachers count on an extra set of hands to keep the day calm and safe. You might also see this role called a teacher assistant, teacher aide, classroom aide, or instructional aide. Pick up day-to-day assignments that fit your week, or step into a long-term assignment and become a familiar face for the same class. No special education experience needed.

What You’ll Do Each Day

  • Support the teacher: Help run daily routines like circle time, centers, small groups, and story time, under the direction of the TK teacher.
  • Build early skills: Work with small groups or individual students on early literacy, numbers, and language skills the teacher has planned.
  • Help with the everyday stuff: Support arrival, snack, recess, handwashing, bathroom breaks, and dismissal.
  • Keep everyone safe: Supervise closely in the classroom and on the playground, and follow school safety procedures.
  • Pitch in where needed: Prepare materials, set up activities, and handle classroom tasks as the teacher asks.

What You Bring

  • Education: A bachelor’s degree in any field.
  • Clearances: A background check (Live Scan fingerprinting) and a quick TB risk assessment. Live Scan cost reimbursed in your paycheck after your 10th day worked.
  • Experience (a big plus): Paid or volunteer work with young children, such as preschool, child care, TK or kindergarten, tutoring, or after-school programs.
  • Patience: Plenty of it, plus the energy to keep up with 4- and 5-year-olds.

If you’ve worked in a preschool, daycare, or after-school program, you already know most of this job.
