Communications Intern
Job description
Are you a writer with fresh ideas? Let them flourish with INHF’s communications department. Write feature stories for the quarterly magazine, create engaging blog posts and assist with other print and digital communications projects, working within an established brand to help reach new and established audiences.
" I don’t think there’s many internships like INHF. It’s a program that can make all the difference in your career." - past communications intern
Work examples
Communications interns will have the opportunity to learn about and work in all aspects of INHF communications, with a strong emphasis on creating written content for our quarterly magazine — our most important communication tool with a distribution of around 10,000 — and our blog. Depending on organizational needs and intern skills, communications interns may also assist with special seasonal projects and publications, outreach events, press releases, photography/videography or social media content creation. The position will also offer chances to be on the land, visit with landowners and network with other staff and interns throughout the organization.
Skills/Qualifications
Strong writing and organizational skills are required. Applicants should also have taken some key writing classes (like news reporting and/or magazine feature writing) and have experience writing at a college publication and/or in a previous internship. Must be able to handle multiple concurrent assignments and deadlines. Prior experience with interviewing sources is preferred. The position is open to both undergraduate and graduate students; applicants must be attending an Iowa school or originally be from Iowa.
We’re looking for students who are:
- Interested in the outdoors
- Attentive to detail
- Flexible, organized and capable of working on multiple projects with varying deadlines
- Comfortable collaborating with a team
- Creative and looking to bring ideas for content and projects to the table
- Excited to learn and write about topics with which they may not be familiar
Availability
Internship begins May 17 and ends August 5. Interns must be available to work 32 hours/week. Pay is $15/hr.
Most work will be done in the INHF office in downtown Des Moines, but there will be opportunities to work remotely, assist at outreach events and visit project sites in the field. Interns must provide their own transportation to and from work.
