About DeepBrain Academy

DeepBrain Academy is a Tenafly, NJ education center serving K-12 students. Our mission is to teach students how to think, not just what to memorize. We build logic, creativity, memory, spatial reasoning and metacognition together, through programs in Olympiad Math, Chess and Go (Brain Games), AI and Coding, test preparation and tutoring.

About the Role

We are looking for a patient, engaging Go instructor to join our Brain Games coaching team. You will teach the ancient board game of Go (also known as Weiqi or Baduk) to students at different levels, from first-time beginners to students ready for more advanced strategic study. Our Go programs include Go Fundamentals (Beginner) and the Mathematical Go Class, along with personalized 1-on-1 coaching, and a pathway to advanced study in Quantum Go.

Classes are typically small (e.g., 3 to 6 students per class), so you will know each student well and can tailor instruction to how they think.

Responsibilities

  • Teach small-group Go classes (typically 1.5-hour sessions), including our 12-session Go Fundamentals course for beginners
  • Teach the Mathematical Go Class, connecting Go strategy to logical reasoning, spatial visualization and mathematical thinking
  • Deliver personalized 1-on-1 Go coaching tailored to each student's level and goals
  • Introduce core concepts clearly: rules, liberties and capture, life and death, territory, opening principles, and tactics
  • Review student games, give constructive feedback, and set practice goals
  • Build students' focus, planning, resilience and calm decision-making under pressure, not just their playing strength
  • Track student progress and share updates with parents and the academy team
  • Help identify students ready to move up to more advanced classes
  • Create a warm, encouraging classroom where students enjoy thinking hard

Qualifications

Required

  • Strong working knowledge of Go, with demonstrated playing strength (e.g., amateur dan level or an equivalent rating on a recognized server or federation; please share your rank)
  • Ability to explain Go strategies clearly and patiently to children and teens in English
  • Reliable, punctual, and comfortable with in-person teaching in Tenafly, NJ
  • Authorization to work in the United States

Preferred

  • Prior experience teaching or coaching Go, chess or other strategy games, especially to K-12 students
  • Experience in Go tournaments
  • Experience with competitive or tournament play, or with training students for competitions
  • Be able to teach onsite in Bergen County, Millburn/Livingston or other NJ/NY areas
  • Familiarity with structured Go curricula and online platforms (e.g., OGS, KGS, Fox Weiqi)
  • Background in math, computer science or education
  • Bilingual ability (e.g., English and Mandarin, Korean or Japanese)
  • Experience with 1-on-1 coaching

Schedule

Part-time, with sessions primarily after school hours and on weekends. Exact days and hours to be discussed.

How to Apply

Please send your resume and a brief cover letter describing your Go background (rank or rating, years playing, and any teaching experience) and motivations to info@deepbrainacademy.org. Candidates who progress will be invited to a short call and a brief teaching demo.
