Children's Music Educator & Program Leader
Children’s Music Educator & Program Leader
Part-Time • Reading, MA • $35–$45/hour
Reading School of Guitar is looking for a creative, energetic educator to lead our programs for kids in grades 2–6. We care much more about your ability to connect with kids, create an engaging classroom, and bring imagination to the program than about advanced guitar skills.
Why RSOG?
Creative Freedom
Bring your own ideas to the classroom and help shape how our kids programs grow.
Paid Planning & Curriculum Time
Lesson planning, training, and curriculum-development time are all paid.
Room to Grow
The position starts very part-time, with real potential to expand the programs and add hours over time.
A Different Kind of Teaching Job
This is not a traditional guitar-teacher position.
-----
We are looking first and foremost for someone who is fantastic with kids — someone with personality, imagination, patience, positive energy, and a genuine interest in creating an environment where children are excited to learn and make music.
Some guitar ability is required, but advanced guitar skills are not. If you are great with kids and have a basic musical foundation, we can help develop the guitar-specific teaching skills you’ll need.
The strongest candidate will be someone who can connect naturally with children, create an engaging learning environment, and bring energy and creativity to the classroom. The Programs
You’ll initially lead two RSOG programs:
Music Explorers — Grades 2–3
A playful introduction to guitar and musicianship built around short activities, musical games, rhythm, movement, listening, creativity, group playing, and age-appropriate guitar skills.
Young Players — Grades 4–6
A next-step program that develops stronger guitar and musicianship skills while keeping the experience social, creative, active, and fun.
Each program currently meets twice per week for approximately 60 minutes per class.
The role starts small, but there is plenty of opportunity to grow the programs and add hours over time.
More Than Just Teaching Classes
We want this person to help shape the experience.
You’ll be responsible for:
- Leading engaging small-group classes
- Writing weekly lesson plans
- Creating games, activities, worksheets, visual aids, and other lesson materials
- Finding new ways to keep kids active, engaged, and learning
- Helping students build confidence, musical skills, and independence
- Managing different personalities, abilities, and attention levels
- Collaborating with the owner to continually improve and expand RSOG’s children’s programs
We’re looking for someone who naturally asks:
“What would make this really fun for the kids, inspire learning, and help them build confidence along the way?”
There is a lot of room for imagination. New games, themed classes, songwriting, rhythm activities, performances, musical challenges, special events, and entirely new programs are all possibilities.
You Might Be a Great Fit If…
Your background might include:
- Elementary education
- Music education
- Children’s theater or performing arts Camps or recreation
- After-school programs
- Youth development
- Child development
- Private music teaching
The exact résumé matters less than the person.
We’re looking for someone who is:
- Naturally comfortable and enthusiastic around kids
- Warm, positive, patient, and confident
- Comfortable leading a group
- Creative and willing to experiment
- Able to redirect distracted students while maintaining a positive environment
- Reliable and organized Interested in developing curriculum and lesson materials
- Comfortable receiving training, feedback, and collaborating with a team
Some guitar experience is required, but personality, creativity, and the ability to teach and connect with children are the most important qualifications for this role.
Training & Support
You’ll work directly with Jon Taubman, owner and lead teacher at Reading School of Guitar, to learn our teaching approach, class structure, curriculum, and guitar-specific material.
We are not expecting someone to walk in already knowing exactly how we do things.
We’re looking for someone with the right instincts and personality who wants to become exceptionally good at teaching kids through music.
Schedule & Compensation
This is a part-time, hourly position with a small initial schedule.
The initial schedule consists of four weekly group classes — two Music Explorers classes and two Young Players classes — along with paid time for planning, training, and curriculum development.
Pay: $35–$45/hour, depending on experience.
Teaching time, required lesson planning, training, and curriculum-development time are all paid.
There is significant potential to add hours and expand the children’s program over time based on enrollment, interest, and the strengths of the person we hire.
Employment is contingent upon successful completion of CORI and SORI background checks.
