Haier Smart Home Case Competition | UChicago & Warburg Pincus

UChicago Global Frontiers Case Competition: Haier Smart Home (Final Presentations in China)

Solve a real strategy question for Haier Smart Home and present your recommendations to its leadership in China. Open to UChicago undergraduates. Register by Monday, October 26.

This initiative was inspired by Warburg Pincus' global partner and co-head of China, Ben Zhou, and reflects the firm's continued commitment to developing the next generation of global business talent. The inaugural corporate partner for the fall competition will be Haier GE Appliances. Finalist teams will travel to the China headquarters during December 14–18 for the presentation.

THE CASE: Globalization, Capital Allocation and Long-Term Value Creation

Teams study Haier Smart Home alongside one comparison company (Whirlpool, Electrolux or iRobot) over the past 10 to 20 years. You will ask what drove differences in operating performance and shareholder value, and what that means for Haier’s future.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS

Question 1: Why did different strategic choices and capital allocation approaches lead to different shareholder value outcomes?

  • Compare market cap, shareholder return, growth, profitability, cash flow and returns on capital
  • Review major capital allocation moves: M&A, divestitures, capex, R&D, dividends and buybacks
  • Trace representative M&A cases from strategic rationale through post-deal results
  • Separate industry and macro effects from company-specific decisions, including governance and execution

Question 2: How should Haier approach future cross-border M&A to create long-term value amid geopolitical tension?

  • Define decision principles: when to pursue a deal, and when to walk away
  • Navigate foreign investment review, industrial policy, supply-chain security and local employment
  • Draw on 1 to 2 international M&A cases for best practices in structuring, localization and integration
  • Build metrics to judge shareholder, economic and social value, including ESG

Framework: Strategic choices → Capital allocation → Transactions & execution → Operating performance → Shareholder value
