Civil Engineer I

Job Summary As a Civil Engineer I with Fort Collins Utilities One Water, you’ll help design and deliver the infrastructure that keeps our community healthy, resilient, and thriving. You’ll work alongside experienced engineers on real-world projects involving drinking water, wastewater, stormwater, flood management, and other critical water systems.

This is an opportunity to put your engineering education into practice while building your skills in planning, design, project delivery, construction, project management, and problem-solving. You’ll collaborate with engineers, planners, construction professionals, consultants, developers, regulatory agencies, and community partners—and see firsthand how good engineering improves the way a community lives and grows.

You’ll be supported by experienced professionals while taking on increasing responsibility and learning how projects move from an idea on paper to infrastructure serving the community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  •  Put your engineering skills to work by supporting the planning, design, construction, and evaluation of municipal water infrastructure projects under the guidance of experienced engineers.
  • Contribute to projects that matter, working across drinking water treatment and distribution, wastewater treatment and collection, stormwater drainage and detention, and floodplain management.
  • Create and review engineering plans and designs to evaluate technical quality, constructability, and compliance with federal, state, county, and City requirements—and help identify solutions when improvements are needed.
  • Collaborate across disciplines and organizations, working with City departments, consultants, contractors, developers, and regulatory agencies to resolve conflicts, coordinate projects, and keep work moving forward.
  • Work on multiple projects at different stages, gaining exposure to the full project lifecycle—from planning and design through construction and implementation.
  • Investigate and analyze information by researching reports, records, drawings, field data, and other technical information to help solve problems and inform engineering decisions.
  • Create and improve engineering deliverables, including reports, specifications, plans, construction schedules, environmental studies, technical analyses, and designs.
  • Get out into the field to visit construction and project sites, observe progress, troubleshoot issues, and help ensure work meets engineering plans, specifications, safety requirements, and quality standards.
  • Build your communication and leadership skills by helping explain engineering projects and technical information to the public, consultants, developers, City boards, departments, and City Council.
  • Share your ideas and perspective by participating in staff meetings, project reviews, interdisciplinary teams, and policy discussions.
  • Explore engineering technology and innovation, including opportunities to develop, operate, or apply complex computer simulation and modeling tools.
  • Develop project management skills by supporting project budgets, schedules, coordination, and delivery.
  • Learn from experienced professionals while progressively taking on more responsibility and developing the technical, project-management, and communication skills needed for a successful career in municipal engineering.

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Understanding of engineering practices and principles. •
  • Ability to use engineering, computer-aided design, spreadsheet, word processing and statistical software.
  • Affinity for math and physics to solve engineering problems.
  • Ability to perform basic statistical analysis.
  • Strong communication including verbal, written, and technical writing skills.
  • Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts.
  • Ability to demonstrate critical thinking, and analytical thought process.
