Visuals Systems and AI Design Intern

About The Autoimmune Fund

Autoimmune and immune-mediated diseases affect millions of people, most of them women. Yet the money has gone almost entirely one way. Of the $40.0 billion in venture funding that went to the field from 2014 to 2025, 94.4% went to drug therapeutics. Prediction, diagnostics, devices, care access, monitoring and remission maintenance shared the remaining 5.6%. The Autoimmune Fund, a seed and Series A venture fund dedicated exclusively to autoimmune and immune-mediated disease, exists to back the rest.

We invest across the whole spectrum of care. We lead investments everywhere except drug therapeutics, where we co-invest. Our thesis follows three scientific revolutions reshaping the field: Immune Precision, Accelerated Aging, and Female Biology.

We are a small team that runs on AI. Everything we publish, from The Autoimmune Decade, our annual report launching in January 2027, to our slides, one-pagers and infographics, runs on one visual system. We want that system to be precise enough that an AI can apply it as reliably as a trained designer.

What You'll Do

You will own how the fund looks, and teach an AI to hold that standard.

First project: align our visual communication system. Audit our palette, typography, icons, chart styles, grids and layout rules across documents and slides. Find where they conflict, propose the rulings, and turn the result into one clear, written source of truth with components ready to use.

Second project: train Claude on our design system. Set up our brand inside Claude's design tools (Claude Design) and write the instructions and reusable skills that teach it our rules. Generate slides, one-pagers and infographics, compare them against the standard, find where the AI drifts, and fix the instructions until it stops.

Then: extend the system as the fund grows. Carry the system and its AI workflows into new formats, including report exhibits, social posts and web pages, so every piece we publish looks like it came from one hand.

You Have

  • Current enrollment in an undergraduate program in design, visual communication, HCI, or a related field
  • A portfolio that shows at least one system, such as a brand identity, type system or component library, not only single pieces
  • Real typographic judgment: pairing, hierarchy, grids, and setting numbers so they align
  • Discipline with a constrained palette, including contrast and accessibility
  • Advanced Figma: components, styles and variables, not just drawing
  • Real, hands-on AI use. You've built prompts, custom instructions, projects or workflows in tools like Claude or ChatGPT, and you can show us one
  • Clear writing. Training an AI is mostly turning taste into precise, testable rules
  • Availability to work in person in Los Angeles

Nice to Have

  • Coursework or lab experience in immunology, biology or another life science
  • Data visualization experience
  • Basic HTML/CSS or Markdown
  • Interest in healthcare, biotech or venture capital

What You'll Get

  • Direct mentorship. You work side by side with the fund's Managing Partner, a clinician and former Wall Street healthcare equity analyst who covered 500+ companies over 14 years.
  • Work that ships. What you build goes into real investor materials and our annual report, not a drawer.
  • Builder-level AI skills. You will design, test and fix AI systems, not just prompt them.
  • A front-row seat to venture. See how a specialist fund sources companies, weighs science and makes decisions.
  • A portfolio piece few undergrads have. A working design system and the AI that applies it, both built by you.

To Apply

Send your resume, a portfolio with at least one system project, and a short note (200 words max) describing one design rule you once had to make precise enough for someone else to follow, and what went wrong the first time to bonnie@autoimmune.fund.

Work Test (3 to 4 hours, unpaid)

We'll send you a packet: an excerpt of our brand rules, three past pieces of ours, and two pages of raw content (Content A and Content B). Send everything back as one PDF plus your instruction file. Unfinished parts are fine if you tell us what you would do next.

1. Rule the conflicts. Our rules and our past pieces do not fully agree. List every conflict you find. For each, state the rule you would adopt and why, in one sentence. Flag anything else in the packet you think is wrong.

2. Design the standard. Design a one-pager from Content A in Figma or a similar tool, by hand, with no AI-generated imagery. This is the reference the AI must match.

3. Teach the AI. Write one set of instructions (a skill, custom instructions or a system prompt) that gets an AI to produce Content B in the same system. The same instructions must work on both pages. No hand edits to the AI output.

4. Score it. Write at least ten pass/fail checks for this system. Score your AI output against them. An honest 7 out of 10 beats an inflated 10 out of 10.

5. Show the work. Share the full chat log. In 150 words or fewer, tell us where the AI failed and what that taught you about writing instructions.
