Engineering Technician - Alpena County Road Commission - Alpena, Michigan

The Alpena County Road Commission seeks an Engineering Technician to join their roads and bridges team in Alpena, Michigan.

This position helps support the construction, inspection, and maintenance of our roads and bridges. This is not a desk-only engineering position. You’ll spend time in the field inspecting projects, taking measurements, performing surveying and materials testing, documenting construction progress, and working with contractors and Road Commission employees. You’ll also spend time in the office working with engineering plans, project records, CADD, estimates, reports, and other technical information.

WHAT WE OFFER.

  • $26.00 – $37.00 per hour starting pay based on experience.

WHAT YOUR DAYS LOOK LIKE.

  • Inspect road and bridge construction and maintenance projects to make sure work follows project plans, specifications, and quality standards.
  • Perform field surveying, construction staking, measurements, and post-construction surveying.
  • Take measurements and track quantities for construction projects.
  • Collect, sample, and test soils, aggregates, and other construction materials in the field and laboratory.
  • Document project activity through daily inspection reports, measurements, quantities, photographs, records, and as-built information.
  • Assist with engineering plans, specifications, estimates, proposals, and other project documents.
  • Use surveying equipment such as total stations, levels, lasers, measuring equipment, and other field tools.
  • Work with CADD and engineering/project software to maintain drawings, records, maps, and project information.
  • Set up, monitor, retrieve, and maintain traffic-counting equipment and prepare traffic data.
  • Check construction work zones and traffic-control devices for proper placement and compliance.
  • Communicate with contractors, Road Commission employees, and others involved with projects to keep work moving and address issues in the field.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR. We’re looking for someone who is comfortable combining technical work with hands-on field work. Ideally, you bring:

  • A high school diploma plus related college or technical training in civil engineering, engineering technology, drafting, CADD, construction technology, surveying, or a closely related field is preferred.
  • 2 or more years of related engineering, drafting, construction, surveying, computer, or technical experience is preferred.
  • Comfort working with computers, spreadsheets, technical records, drawings, and engineering-related software.
  • The ability to read and understand construction plans, specifications, measurements, and technical information.
  • Good attention to detail and the ability to accurately document what you see in the field.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work professionally with contractors, co-workers, and the public.
  • The ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Willingness to obtain required MDOT inspection certifications for aggregate inspection and office technician duties. Certification paid for by the Road Commission.
  • Flexibility to work extended hours when construction projects or conditions require it.
