2027 Summer Intern, Energy Researcher (Reston, VA; Arlington, VA)
ICF is seeking a detail-oriented, self-motivated summer intern to support our Energy Programs, Analytics, and Security line of business. The intern will contribute to projects that help government and commercial clients address complex challenges involving energy programs, markets, technologies, analytics, infrastructure, and security.
Working as part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary team, the intern will support a variety of research, data analysis, program implementation, technical assistance, communications, and operational activities. The position will provide exposure to high-profile energy initiatives and the opportunity to work with experienced professionals across a diverse portfolio of clients and projects.
This is a full-time, 10-week internship that will begin in early June 2027. This role will be hybrid (2x per week) from Arlington, VA or Reston, VA. At this time, relocation or housing assistance is not available. Pay is expected to be $23/hour for undergraduate interns.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Conduct research on energy programs, markets, technologies, infrastructure, policies, and related topics.
- Collect, review, organize, and analyze quantitative and qualitative data to support program implementation, evaluation, planning, and decision-making.
- Help translate technical and analytical information into clear findings, narratives, and recommendations for reports, presentations, case studies, and other client deliverables.
- Support the implementation of client programs and initiatives, including technical assistance, stakeholder engagement, participant support, and program operations.
- Help maintain accurate and detailed information in customer relationship management, project management, or other program tracking systems.
- Analyze energy consumption, building performance, program participation, market, operational, or other relevant data to identify trends and support project objectives.
- Contribute to the development of communications, outreach, and training resources, including presentations, guidance materials, case studies, webinars, workshops, and virtual or in-person events.
- Support project teams in testing and implementing analytical tools, technology solutions, process improvements, and other project resources.
- Assist with project coordination, including tracking activities, organizing information, preparing meeting materials, documenting action items, and supporting the completion of deliverables.
- Collaborate with ICF team members, clients, partners, and stakeholders to support energy-related programs and initiatives.
- Provide additional research, analytical, communications, and operational support based on project and client needs.
Basic Qualifications
- A minimum of 30 college credit hours completed in engineering, energy, environmental science or studies, data analytics, statistics, economics, business, public policy, communications, computer science, or a closely related discipline.
- Due to contract requirements, U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Work Authorization is required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Academic, professional, or volunteer experience related to energy, engineering, analytics, infrastructure, security, environmental programs, public policy, or program implementation.
- Experience conducting research and synthesizing information from multiple sources.
- Experience analyzing quantitative or qualitative data using spreadsheets, databases, visualization tools, or similar applications.
- Experience preparing reports, presentations, articles, case studies, guidance materials, or other written products.
- Interest in consulting and working with government, utility, commercial, industrial, or nonprofit clients.
- Strong analytical, organizational, research, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary team.
- Ability to manage multiple assignments, prioritize responsibilities, and meet deadlines.
- Strong attention to detail, initiative, intellectual curiosity, and willingness to learn.
