Associate Software Engineer (Placement Year)
About Us
We are a pioneering health and life sciences company on a mission to revolutionise the way we all understand and support our health, target discovery and R&D. Our mission is simple: to help people, and their doctors, make better decisions that lead to longer, fuller lives. We focus on the common diseases that affect billions—the ones that put the greatest strain on our healthcare systems. Each person is unique, and by decoding the insights in our DNA, we’re building cutting-edge tools and platforms that enable truly personalised medicine. From prevention and early screening to diagnosis, treatment, and even the development of new medicines, there is so much more to discover and build. Our vision is bold: a world where everyone benefits from genomics. If you are inspired by the potential of cutting-edge science and technology and want to have a real impact on the future of healthcare, we’d love to welcome you for your placement year!
Placement Programme Overview
From day one, you’ll become an integrated member of a cross-functional product team. Rather than observing from the sidelines, you’ll work directly on the software applications and services underlying our Mystra and Healthcare platforms. Your work will directly support real-world genomic analysis, making a tangible impact on health outcomes while giving you space to grow your technical capabilities in a highly collaborative and supportive environment.
Your Opportunity
As a Placement Student, you will work alongside experienced Software Engineers, Platform Engineers, Product Managers, Designers, and Scientists. Under the guidance and supervision of senior team members, you will develop both your technical skills and domain understanding in health tech.
Throughout your placement, you will:
- Build Real Software: Design, write, and maintain clean, testable application code and integrate with APIs and databases.
- Learn Modern Tech Stack: Gain practical experience with modern programming languages (such as Python, Java, Kotlin, or TypeScript), RESTful APIs, SQL databases, and major cloud infrastructure.
- Work in Agile Teams: Participate in sprint planning, code reviews, daily stand-ups, and agile delivery processes.
- Solve Real Technical Challenges: Debug issues across complex codebases, automate routine tasks, and help improve application reliability and performance SLAs.
- Security & Best Practice: Develop an understanding of high information security standards required when working with sensitive genomic data.
What You’ll Gain
By the end of your placement year, you will have developed practical, hands-on experience in:
- Production Engineering: Writing clean, documented, and well-tested code following industry standards.
- Data & Cloud Technologies: Working with relational database modeling, query optimization, REST APIs, and cloud-hosted services.
- Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration: Partnering with data scientists, platform teams, and product managers to translate complex scientific requirements into working software.
- Problem-Solving & Debugging: Root cause analysis and deciding on effective fix strategies (patching vs. refactoring).
- Professional & Agile Delivery: Best practices in Git version control, CI/CD automated testing, code review etiquette, and sprint planning.
Our Commitment to You
We invest heavily in our placement students to set you up for a successful career after university. We provide:
- Dedicated Mentorship: Guidance and supervision from senior engineers and a buddy to help you settle in from day one.
- Structured Induction & Onboarding: Clear sprint goals and expectations tailored to help you build confidence early.
- Real Ownership: Meaningful tasks and feature work with genuine impact on our platform.
- Continuous L&D: Access to training materials, learning opportunities, and regular performance feedback to expand your capabilities.
- A Supportive Environment: A collaborative, inclusive, and hybrid culture.
