Position Summary
We are seeking a creative, enthusiastic, and dependable After-School Art & Maker Instructor to lead hands-on art and sculpture projects for students in Newark, CA.
This is a great opportunity for college students or recent graduates studying Studio Art, Fine Arts, Art Education, Education, Child Development, Visual Arts, Design, Psychology, or related fields who enjoy working with young children.
The instructor will guide students through fun, age-appropriate projects that may include painting, sculpture, papier-mâché, air-dry clay, collage, mixed media, recycled-material art, and creative building projects.
You do not need to be an expert in every art medium. We are looking for someone who is creative, patient, organized, and excited to help young children explore art and express their ideas.
What You’ll Do
- Lead weekly after-school art classes for elementary students during the Winter Term
- Teach engaging, age-appropriate projects in sculpture
- Introduce students to materials such as air-dry clay, papier-mâché, paint, paper, cardboard, recycled materials, collage materials, and other art supplies
- Demonstrate art techniques and break projects into simple, easy-to-follow steps
- Encourage creativity, experimentation, imagination, and self-expression
- Help students build confidence in their artistic abilities
- Support different learning styles, abilities, and creative interests
- Create a positive, inclusive, welcoming, and safe classroom environment
- Manage a small group of elementary-age students
- Prepare, organize, distribute, and clean up art materials
- Maintain a safe and organized classroom or art-making space
- Communicate with program coordinators and school staff regarding attendance, supplies, and student needs
Who We’re Looking For
We encourage applicants who:
- Have an interest or background in art, sculpture, painting, ceramics, crafts, design, visual arts, or mixed media
- Enjoy working with young children, especially elementary students.
- Are creative, patient, positive, and dependable
- Can explain projects and instructions clearly
- Are comfortable leading and supervising a small group of students
- Can adapt projects for different skill levels and learning needs
- Are organized and comfortable managing art supplies and classroom clean-up
- Want to gain experience in teaching, arts education, youth development, or classroom management
- Applicant must be residing in Newark or within 20 miles of Newark.
Experience working with children through tutoring, camps, after-school programs, childcare, mentoring, coaching, volunteering, or teaching is a plus.
A background check is required prior to employment.
