Position Overview
The Process Engineering Intern supports the manufacturing engineering team in developing and improving production molding processes for thermoplastic and liquid silicone rubber materials. This position provides hands-on experience in process engineering, continuous improvement, quality systems, and manufacturing operations while working under the guidance of experienced engineers and technical staff. The intern will assist with project activities, process documentation, data collection, and troubleshooting efforts to develop practical engineering skills.
Position Responsibilities / Essential Functions
- Safety is everyone's responsibility.
- Follow all safety procedures and report unsafe conditions, safety concerns, and near misses.
- Learn and apply safe operating practices when working with manufacturing equipment.
- Assist Process Engineer with development and improvement of molding processes for new and existing products.
- Support creation and maintenance of standardized work instructions and process documentation.
- Collect and analyze manufacturing data for process improvement projects.
- Assist with process studies including cycle time studies, changeover analysis, and capability assessments.
- Support root cause investigations and corrective actions for process performance issues.
- Participate in continuous improvement and Lean Manufacturing initiatives.
- Assist with implementation and maintenance of APQP documentation and project records.
- Help prepare process validation documentation including IQ/OQ/PQ activities as assigned.
- Support technical training efforts through development of training materials and work instructions.
- Assist engineering personnel with mold trials, material evaluations, and equipment testing.
- Participate in Gemba activities and support improvement projects related to productivity, quality, and efficiency.
- Compile reports, charts, and presentations to communicate project results.
- Learn and apply problem-solving tools such as Fishbone Diagrams, 5-Why Analysis, and 8D methodology.
- Support process documentation updates and document control requirements.
- Assist in monitoring key manufacturing metrics and performance indicators.
- Support production operations with routine engineering assignments and technical problem-solving activities.
- Participate in team meetings and collaborate with cross-functional departments.
- Maintain regular, on-time attendance.
- Support organizational needs and special projects as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications / Skills
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Process Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- Junior or Senior standing preferred.
- Basic understanding of manufacturing processes and engineering principles.
- Interest in plastics processing, injection molding, or manufacturing engineering.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to learn technical concepts and apply them in a manufacturing environment.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
- Ability to work independently on assigned tasks while seeking guidance when needed.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Demonstrates initiative, curiosity, and a willingness to learn.
- High ethical standards and professional conduct.
Highly Desirable
- Previous internship, co-op, laboratory, or manufacturing experience.
- Exposure to Lean Manufacturing principles.
- Familiarity with engineering data analysis and statistics.
- Basic understanding of quality systems such as ISO 9001 or ISO 13485.
- Experience with CAD software or engineering design tools..
