Executive Director of NMH Summer Lab and Auxiliary Initiatives

The Opportunity:

Northfield Mount Hermon (NMH), a coeducational boarding and day school for grades 9 to 12, plus a postgraduate year, in western Massachusetts near the borders of New Hampshire and Vermont, seeks an entrepreneurial and creative leader and manager to serve as Executive Director of NMH Summer Lab and Auxiliary Initiatives. The Executive Director will lead the continued evolution and growth of NMH’s summer and auxiliary programs, developing innovative ways to extend the school’s educational mission, introduce new audiences to NMH, make thoughtful use of the school’s extraordinary campus and resources, and generate meaningful revenue in support of the institution.

Located on the banks of the Connecticut River on a 746-acre wooded campus in western Massachusetts, NMH is a coeducational, secular boarding school serving 620 students in grades 9 through 12, plus a postgraduate year, from 50 countries and 30 U.S. states. The school offers an advanced educational experience – the College-Model Academic Program – that empowers students to shape deep learning experiences, follow their passions, and balance rigorous academics with wide-ranging artistic and athletic pursuits. The robust curriculum offers more than 160 courses, including signature programs in environmental studies, the humanities, and social entrepreneurship. NMH’s mission to educate students’ heads, hearts, and hands ensures that they possess the skills, resources, and convictions to serve and lead with humanity and purpose.

Reporting to the Head of School, the Executive Director provides strategic, entrepreneurial, financial, and operational leadership for NMH’s portfolio of summer and auxiliary programs. The role carries responsibility for approximately $1.8 million in annual program activity and for the overall profit and loss associated with these programs. The Executive Director will continually assess the performance of current offerings; identify opportunities for growth, improvement, partnership, and new program development; and ensure that NMH’s programs deliver educational value, an exceptional participant experience, and appropriate financial returns to the school.

The Executive Director will also be a member of the broader NMH community. During the academic year, the position will include limited faculty or community responsibilities, which may include advising, dormitory duty, coaching, teaching, or administrative support as appropriate. This connection to the daily life of the school is important: the strongest summer and auxiliary programs will grow from a deep understanding of NMH, its students, its educational philosophy, and the community and culture that distinguish it.

This is a rare opportunity for a creative and commercially-minded educational leader to build something distinctive at one of the country’s leading boarding schools. NMH is looking for someone who can imagine what is possible, determine what is viable, bring people together around a compelling vision, and then execute with excellence. The successful candidate will combine entrepreneurial energy with sound business judgment, strategic thinking with operational discipline, and ambition with a genuine commitment to NMH’s mission and community.
