Medical Assistant / Medical Office Specialist – Pre-PA Gap Year Opportunity

Manhattan, NYC | Full-Time

Ideal for a recent college graduate planning to attend PA school or another healthcare professional program who is looking for a 1–2 year gap-year position with meaningful patient interaction and direct exposure to physicians in a busy orthopedic spine surgery practice.

We are seeking a motivated, dependable, and personable Medical Assistant / Medical Office Specialist to join our growing team. This is a hybrid clinical and patient-facing role with exposure to the full patient-care process, from initial consultation and imaging review through treatment, surgery, and postoperative recovery.

Responsibilities

  • Room patients and update histories, medications, and vital signs
  • Prepare exam rooms and assist physicians during visits
  • Coordinate MRIs, CT scans, X-rays, referrals, and follow-up care
  • Upload and organize imaging for physician review
  • Communicate with patients, hospitals, pharmacies, and other medical offices
  • Assist with postoperative follow-up and surgical coordination
  • Support front-office and administrative workflows as needed

Why This Is a Great Gap-Year Role

You will have the opportunity to work closely with spine surgeons, gain meaningful patient-facing experience, learn medical terminology and imaging, and follow patients from consultation through surgery and recovery.

This is a hands-on working role, not a shadowing position.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree completed or near completion
  • Strong interest in PA school or another healthcare career
  • Professional, organized, dependable, and comfortable working with patients
  • Strong communication and multitasking skills
  • Prior healthcare experience is helpful but not required
  • Training provided
  • 1-year minimum commitment preferred

Candidates with backgrounds in biology, neuroscience, kinesiology, exercise science, psychology, public health, or other pre-health fields are encouraged to apply.

Please submit a resume and brief cover letter describing your interest in healthcare, anticipated start date, and any prior patient-facing or clinical experience.

Note: PA programs vary in how they classify medical assistant experience for direct patient care hours. Applicants should confirm requirements with the programs they plan to apply to.
