Elementary School Literacy and Math Teacher in Lesotho
Job description
We are looking for U.S. citizens who want to be a part of something bigger and are willing to go the distance to make a difference. Is that you?
In more than 60 countries, Peace Corps Volunteers are putting their purpose, passion, and skills to work in partnership with welcoming host communities – growing, teaching, learning, and making change together.
As a Peace Corps Volunteer, you'll live and work alongside community members on locally prioritized projects, receiving a stipend and other support as you immerse yourself in a new culture. You’ll build relationships, exchange knowledge, and help transform lives for generations.
About the project
Help make every day at school a fun and enriching experience for elementary school students in Lesotho while developing your own classroom expertise.
Lesotho faces significant challenges in foundational learning, particularly in mathematics. In 2023, less than 20% of elementary students met the minimum proficiency—the second-lowest rate among 52 countries assessed. With only 31% of elementary teachers meeting basic math competency, breaking the cycle of low performance remains difficult. Limited access to early childhood education and high repetition rates also contribute to persistent learning challenges. Life skills education is also critical given the country’s HIV/AIDS prevalence of 21.7%. While the Government of Lesotho has made strengthening foundational learning a national priority, additional support and classroom-level expertise are needed.
As an Elementary School Literacy and Math Teacher, you will collaborate with teachers to implement practical, student-centered strategies that make lessons more accessible and effective. You will help students build essential literacy and numeracy skills, boost their confidence, and develop healthier decision-making. At the same time, teachers will gain tools, strategies, and confidence that will sustain improvements long after your service concludes. Your service will contribute to national education goals and help strengthen Lesotho’s human capital—building stronger students, schools, and communities.
