About the Role
We are looking for reliable and engaging Intro to Coding Instructors to lead our game development-themed afterschool enrichment program in Oakland for Fall 2026. In this role, you’ll help elementary students unlock their creativity by teaching them how to build their very own interactive games, animations, and digital stories.
Instructors should be comfortable working with younger students, translating foundational coding principles (like loops, events, and logic) into fun, game-based projects, and keeping the classroom environment high-energy and accessible.
What You’ll Do
Lead Game Dev Sessions: Guide elementary students through beginner-friendly block coding and game creation platforms (e.g., Scratch, MakeCode).
Mentor Young Creators: Help students design characters, code mechanics (movement, scoring, collision), and debug their original games.
Classroom Management: Maintain a supportive, energetic, and structured environment where students feel comfortable experimenting and learning from mistakes.
Encourage Collaboration: Foster a positive culture of playtesting, constructive feedback, and problem-solving among peers.
Supervision & Safety: Ensure student safety and proper care of equipment during all program hours.
Session Reporting: Submit a brief after-class summary report following each session.
Communication: Coordinate professionally with program staff, school site coordinators, and partners.
What We’re Looking For
Local Residency Requirement: Must currently reside in Oakland, CA, or within 20 miles of the city to ensure reliable, on-time arrivals for afterschool hours.
Youth Experience: Prior experience working with elementary-aged children (grades 3–5) preferred.
STEM/Coding Background: Familiarity with block-based coding, basic game design concepts, STEM, or education is a strong plus.
Soft Skills: Excellent communication, patience, enthusiasm, and strong classroom management skills.
Reliability: Punctual, dependable, and capable of leading a classroom independently.
Work Authorization: Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S.
Requirements
Must reside in Oakland, CA or within 20 miles.
Must pass a background check prior to the start date.
Must complete a brief written report after each class session.
About the Program
Our enrichment programs aim to make STEM learning fun, relevant, and accessible. By using game development as a hook, we empower elementary students to shift from passive media consumers to creative digital builders through hands-on, project-based learning.
