Communications Intern (UNR - Medical School, Pack Intern, Spring '27)

**This internship is hosted by UNR Medical School and sponsored by the Nevada Career Studio and ASUN. 

 

Students are highly encouraged to complete a 15-minute drop-in or schedule an in-person or virtual 30- minute appointment with a Career Mentor BEFORE submitting an application. Resumes and cover letters that do not meet NCS best practices will not be included in applicant packages to employers. 

 

After the application period closes in Handshake, the NCS Internships Team reviews the applicants and sends eligible students' applicant packages to employers for them to reach out to conduct interviews and make the final intern selection. Employers will contact students directly if they are interested in moving forward with them as a candidate.

Internship Description: 

The Communications Intern will support the marketing and communications team with the development of written stories, news releases and media advisories, assisting in media relations, internal and external communications, and web content writing.  

  

This role will provide the opportunity to develop skills in professional interviewing, short and long-form storytelling, and digital communications campaigns.  

  

The intern will work closely with the team to plan and schedule supporting multimedia materials to accompany written content. 

 

Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Write stories in the CMS platform for Nevada Today 
  • Develop and send news releases and media advisories in CISION 
  • Assist in media relations and communications activities 
  • Research trends and brainstorm ideas to tell unique and engaging stories to UNR Med audiences 

 

Goals and Expectations of the Intern: 

  • Complete 120 hours of work as an intern (8-15 hours per week, 15 weeks total) 
  • Produce from start to finish at least 5 original articles for publication on Nevada Today (plan, research, interview, draft and publish) 

 

Required Qualifications: 

  • Must be a degree-seeking undergraduate student at the University of Nevada, Reno during the Spring ‘27 semester 
  • December ‘26 or earlier graduates are not eligible for the Pack Internship Grant Program
  • Ability to work independently to research and draft story content 
  • Knowledge and understanding of Associated Press style 
  • Strong interview, writing and editing skills 
  • Clear oral and written communications skills 
  • Ability to work in a deadline-oriented environment 

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Preference for students in their second semester sophomore year or later 
  • Preference for students pursing a degree in English, creative writing, communications, journalism, and/or public and professional writing 

 

Desired Schedule for Intern:  

Part-time hours are available during regular business hours, Monday through Friday, from 9 am to 5 pm. 

 

PIGP internships require interns to complete 120 hours during their internship. It is the intern’s responsibility to ensure this requirement is met.
