UPD & UOR Outreach and Communications Intern (UNR - Police Department Northern Command & Organizational Resilience, Pack Intern, Spring '27)

**This internship is hosted by University Police Department Northern Command & Organizational Resilience and sponsored by the Nevada Career Studio and ASUN. 

 

Students are highly encouraged to complete a 15 minute drop-in or schedule an in-person or virtual 30-minute appointment with a Career Mentor BEFORE submitting an application. Resumes and cover letters that do not meet NCS best practices will not be included in applicant packages to employers. 

  

After the application period closes in Handshake, the NCS Internships Team reviews the applicants and sends eligible students' applicant packages to employers for them to reach out to conduct interviews and make the final intern selection. Employers will contact students directly if they are interested in moving forward with them as a candidate.

About University Police Department Northern Command & Organizational Resilience: 

The University Police Department Northern Command (UPD) and Organizational Resilience work together to promote a safe, prepared, and resilient campus community. UPD provides law enforcement, emergency response, crime prevention, safety education, and community outreach across the institutions it serves. Organizational Resilience focuses on emergency management, continuity planning, preparedness, and helping the University effectively respond to and recover from disruptions. Together, the teams collaborate on training, exercises, public education, special events, and initiatives that strengthen campus safety and preparedness. Their shared goal is to ensure students, faculty, staff, and visitors have the resources and knowledge needed to stay safe and respond confidently during emergencies. 

 

Internship Description: 

The Outreach and Communications Intern will support University Police and Organizational Resilience through campus outreach, event planning, social media, and video content creation. The intern will assist with developing educational campaigns, creating and editing short-form videos, supporting campus safety and preparedness events, and identifying creative ways to engage students. This position provides hands-on experience in strategic communication, public safety, emergency preparedness, community engagement, and event coordination while allowing the intern to develop portfolio-ready projects. 

 

Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Assist University Police and Organizational Resilience with planning and staffing campus outreach events, creating and editing short-form video content 
  • Develop social media and educational campaigns 
  • Design promotional materials 
  • Researching safety and preparedness topics 
  • Support community engagement initiatives 
  • Attend planning meetings 
  • Collaborate with campus and community partners 
  • Assist with event logistics 
  • Track engagement and project outcomes 
  • Participate in department activities, trainings, and projects to gain broader exposure to public safety, emergency management, and organizational resilience. 

 

Goals and Expectations of the Intern: 

  • Complete 120 hours of work as an intern (8-15 hours per week, 15 weeks total) 
  • Develop professional communication, outreach, and project management skills while producing high-quality content and supporting campus events. 
  • Be reliable, professional, creative, collaborative, and able to complete projects independently with guidance. 

 

Required Qualifications: 

  • Must be a degree-seeking undergraduate student at the University of Nevada, Reno during the Spring ‘27 semester 
  • December ‘26 or earlier graduates are not eligible for the Pack Internship Grant Program

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Strong communication, organization, and teamwork skills 
  • Interest in outreach, social media, video content, event planning, or public safety 
  • Willingness to learn 
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.  
  • Experience with Canva, social media, photography, or video editing is preferred but not required. 

 

Desired Schedule for Intern: 

Approximately 8–10 hours per week with a flexible schedule Monday–Friday, primarily during regular business hours, with occasional evening or weekend events as available. 

 

PIGP internships require interns to complete 120 hours during their internship. It is the intern’s responsibility to ensure this requirement is met.
