Microbiology Student Engagement and Innovation Intern (UNR Med Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Pack Intern, Spring '27)
**This internship is hosted by Department of Microbiology and Immunology, UNR Med and sponsored by the Nevada Career Studio and ASUN.
Students are highly encouraged to complete a 15 minute drop-in or schedule an in-person or virtual 30-minute appointment with a Career Mentor BEFORE submitting an application. Resumes and cover letters that do not meet NCS best practices will not be included in applicant packages to employers.
After the application period closes in Handshake, the NCS Internships Team reviews the applicants and sends eligible students' applicant packages to employers for them to reach out to conduct interviews and make the final intern selection. Employers will contact students directly if they are interested in moving forward with them as a candidate.

About Department of Microbiology and Immunology, UNR Med:
Housed within the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine, the Department of Microbiology & Immunology (MI), prioritizes training and education. Our research is centered on immunology, with a strong focus on cancer biology and microbial pathogenesis, particularly in the context of emerging microbial infections and biodefense. The Microbiology and Immunology (MI) B.S. program, a collaborative initiative between the School of Medicine and the College of Science, is dedicated to educating students in the core principles of modern microbiology. Our curriculum emphasizes human and animal infectious diseases and immunology, making it highly attractive to pre-health professional students and those aiming for careers in microbiology research and clinical laboratory microbiology.
Internship Description:
With support from the MI Faculty and the MI Program Director, the Microbiology Student Engagement and Innovation Intern will support the recruitment and retention of students to the department through events, marketing, and assessment, and curriculum.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Participate in student recruitment events to attract prospective students to our programs
- Help update recruitment materials to reflect the latest departmental offerings and advancements
- Assist with the design of demonstrations and practical exercises for two new biosafety-focused courses
- Participate in assessment activities aimed at enhancing the quality and effectiveness of existing courses
- Support the program director and teaching faculty and contribute significantly to the department's growth and development.
Goals and Expectations of the Intern:
- Complete 120 hours of work as an intern (8-15 hours per week, 15 weeks total)
- Student Recruitment:
- The goal is to help successfully attract a diverse pool of prospective students to the programs. The expectation is to participate actively in events, engage with potential candidates, and effectively communicate the department's strengths and opportunities.
- Materials Preparation:
- The goal is to ensure that all recruitment materials are current, accurate, and reflective of the department's latest offerings and advancements. The expectation is to collaborate with others to create visually appealing and informative materials.
- Course Development:
- The goal is to help develop engaging and practical demonstrations and exercises for new biosafety courses. The expectation is to contribute innovative ideas and ensure that the course content is relevant, comprehensive, and meets educational standards.
- Course Assessment:
- The goal is to enhance the quality and effectiveness of existing courses through thorough assessment activities. The expectation is to help with analysis of student performance and report preparation so that the program director can identify areas for improvement and implement necessary changes to enhance student learning experiences.
Required Qualifications:
- Must be a degree-seeking undergraduate student at the University of Nevada, Reno during the Spring ‘27 semester
- December ‘26 or earlier graduates are not eligible for the Pack Internship Grant Program
- Currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in microbiology and immunology or a related field.
- Strong organizational and multitasking abilities, good written and verbal communication skills, and basic proficiency in using relevant software and tools are required.
- Creativity and a willingness to learn are essential.
- The ability to work effectively with a diverse team, including faculty, graduate students, and other undergraduate students,
- A collaborative mindset to support the program director in achieving departmental goals, is necessary.
Preferred Qualifications:
- A basic understanding of microbiology and immunology, as well as familiarity with the MI, B.S program.
- Involvement in student organizations or volunteer work demonstrating organizational and communication skills.
- A willingness to learn about current educational assessment techniques and strategies.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office including Excel, PowerPoint and Word.
Desired Schedule for Intern:
- Applicants must be available on Friday mornings for recruitment events.
- May also need to be available on some Wednesday mornings as well.
- Usually, 2–3-hour shifts would be the minimum.
- Some course development and assessment activities can be conducted remotely on a flexible schedule.
PIGP internships require interns to complete 120 hours during their internship. It is the intern’s responsibility to ensure this requirement is met.
