STEM Education Marketing Intern (Desert Research Institute, Pack Intern, Spring '27)
**This internship is hosted by Desert Research Institute and sponsored by the Nevada Career Studio (NCS).
Students are highly encouraged to complete a 15 minute drop-in or schedule an in-person or virtual 30-minute appointment with a Career Mentor BEFORE submitting an application. Resumes and cover letters that do not meet NCS best practices will not be included in applicant packages to employers.
After the application period closes in Handshake, the NCS Internships Team reviews the applicants and sends eligible students' applicant packages to employers for them to reach out to conduct interviews and make the final intern selection. Employers will contact students directly if they are interested in moving forward with them as a candidate.

The STEM Education Program provides inquiry-based STEM curriculum through our Green Boxes, presents educator professional development trainings, offers college internships, provides workforce development opportunities, and facilitates all-ages outreach programs.
Internship Description:
The Desert Research Institute (DRI) STEM Education Program is seeking a motivated and creative STEM Education Marketing Intern to support communications, outreach, and digital marketing efforts that promote STEM education opportunities across Nevada. The STEM Education Program provides educator professional development, Green Box STEM curriculum resources, college internships, workforce development initiatives, and community outreach programs that engage thousands of students, educators, and community members annually.
The Marketing Intern will assist with content creation, social media management, digital storytelling, and newsletter development to increase program visibility, highlight participant experiences, promote upcoming events, and strengthen community engagement. This internship offers an opportunity to contribute to STEM education initiatives that support educators, students, and communities through engaging, research-based STEM learning experiences.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Complete 120 hours of work as an intern (8-15 hours per week, 15 weeks total)
- Create engaging content that promotes all DRI STEM Education Program initiatives for social media platforms, including Instagram, X, Facebook, YouTube, and LinkedIn.
- Assist with planning and implementing social media campaigns and monitoring resulting analytics. Use analytics to provide recommendations for improving performance and audience reach.
- Capture and edit photos, graphics, short-form videos, and reels showcasing STEM learning experiences and program impacts.
- Support the creation and distribution of the program's monthly e-newsletter, which may include content creation and team coordination.
- Draft marketing and communications materials for outreach campaigns, events, and special initiatives.
- Collaborate with STEM Education Program staff to collect stories, photos, testimonials, and program outcomes.
- Maintain brand consistency across digital communications and marketing materials.
- Research and identify underutilized marketing opportunities.
Goals and Expectations of the Intern:
The STEM Education Marketing Intern is expected to support DRI's mission of connecting science to society by collaborating with program staff to create engaging marketing content, analyzing impact of posts across platforms, identifying underutilized marketing opportunities, and sharing insights with program staff. Interns will gain experience in digital marketing strategy and management. By the end of the internship, interns will:
- Contribute to the successful development of marketing content for programs such as community outreach, curriculum units, educator professional development, and workforce development.
- Analyze and share impact results of current marketing strategies.
- Research and identify underutilized marketing opportunities and provide recommendations to program staff to improve marketing campaigns and increase engagement.
- Gain experience in utilizing a branding guide to create marketing content.
- Support program documentation by attending events and capturing photos and videos to utilize in content creation.
Required Qualifications:
- Must be a degree-seeking student at the University of Nevada, Reno during the Spring ‘27 semester
- December ‘26 or earlier graduates are not eligible for the Pack Internship Grant Program
- Experience using social media platforms for professional, educational, or organizational purposes.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience capturing content at events.
- Familiarity with content creation tools such as Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, CapCut, or similar platforms.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with a team.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Interest in STEM education, science communication, community engagement, or nonprofit marketing.
Desired Schedule for Intern:
Applicants should be available to work during our normal hours of operation, M-F, 9am-5pm. Nights and weekends may be required in conjunction with events and trainings.
PIGP internships require interns to complete 120 hours during their internship. It is the intern’s responsibility to ensure this requirement is met.
