Stewards Individual Placements, a program of Conservation Legacy, provides individuals with AmeriCorps service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural and cultural resources. The Youth Empowerment Steward (YES) initiative aims to increase access to the outdoors for all Americans.

Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park
Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park (ABLI) preserves, protects, and interprets the significant cultural and natural resources associated with Abraham Lincoln’s birth, early boyhood, and memorialization. The park is located in Kentucky and includes the Symbolic Birth Cabin, Memorial Building, and Knob Creek Farm. The mission of the National Park Service is to preserve unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of national parks for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations.
The Interpretation and Education Division at Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park is dedicated to creating impactful educational experiences that engage visitors of all ages. The Division’s primary focus is on fostering meaningful connections for youth through tailored educational programs, empowering young learners to understand and appreciate the history of Abraham Lincoln. Building on this foundation, the Division also develops programs for lifelong learners, ensuring that educational opportunities are attainable and relevant to individuals throughout their lives.
Role of YES Member at Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park
Stewards Individual Placements, in partnership with Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park, are seeing a Youth Empowerment Steward (YES) AmeriCorps Member to support a project focused on enhancing the access/attainability and educational programming at Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park. This project reflects a continued focus on improving on-site access and usability for visitors who are physically present at the park, with an emphasis on how visitors of different ages and learning styles engage with educational content. The project emphasizes flexible, mobile-friendly delivery and multi-sensory (visual, auditory, and tactile) learning approaches that allow visitors to engage at their own pace. This YES Member will collaborate with park staff to adapt programs into formats that consider visual, auditory, tactile, and experiential learning preferences.
Description of Duties:
To achieve the goals of this YES position, the Member will:
- Assess access of the park’s Educational Spaces
- Assist park staff with assessing educational programs and events
- Identify potential barriers related to access, usability, and learning style compatibility
- Observations will inform future improvements
- Assist in developing attainable educational materials
- Including mobile-friendly content, audio elements, visual supports, tactile components where appropriate, and plain language summaries that support different learning styles
- Support the collection and review of visitor feedback related to access, usability, and learning preferences
- Feedback will be used to inform adjustments to educational programming and resources
- Assist with preparation and delivery of educational programs on site and during special events, with attention on varied audience needs
- Assist with developing and sharing practical guidance for staff and volunteers related to all-welcoming and age-appropriate educational practices
Qualifications:
- United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien
- Be between the ages of 18-30 (or up to age 35 with Veteran status)
- Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate
- Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check
- Ability to drive with an insurable driving record
- Drivers must be 21 years of age, or have held a valid driver’s license for a minimum of 3 years
- Ability to commit to 18 weeks of service
- Have a connection to the disability community
- Strong interest in history, education, and/or access-related projects
- Strong communication skills
- Comfortable with public engagement
- Comfortable using Microsoft Office programs
Preferred Qualifications and Skills
- Self-starter with the ability to work independently and collaboratively
- Some college coursework in related field is preferred
- Previous experience in an educational or museum setting
- Familiarity with ADA and ABAAS
- Experience in designing educational materials or programs
- Strong organizational skills with attention to detail
- Experience with customer service or public interaction
- Knowledge of Abraham Lincoln's history and the park's resources

Time Requirements:
- Typically, this position is expected to serve Monday – Friday,but exact service schedules may vary. A half hour lunch break will not be counted towards AmeriCorps service
- Member may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their service term
- YES Members are part of a cohort and meet virtually online on a bi-weekly basis; the YES cohort space is established for YES Members to collaborate and support one another on various access projects, while also discussing various personal and professional development topics
Orientation and Training:
- Member will receive an orientation that includes training on AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities
- Orientation to access standards, universal design, interpretive themes, and learning considerations
- Training in universal design principles and content development tools
- Training in visitor engagement techniques, survey methods, and basic data organization
- Training in program facilitation and audience support

Evaluation and Reporting:
As an AmeriCorps member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed the required number of hours, the member has satisfactorily completed assignments, and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service.
Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
