Campaign Coordinator

About the Organization:

Friends of Blackwater (FOB) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit, originally founded in 2000 to advocate for designating the entire Blackwater Canyon as public land, which was accomplished in 2024.

During that time, FOB developed many programs with the underlying ideology that community engagement centered on the West Virginia Highlands, whether through history, recreation, or ecology, increases appreciation for these amazing places, further develops a positive relationship between the people and the land, and helps build sustainable, non-extractive economies in Appalachia.

Position Summary:

The Campaign Coordinator at Friends of Blackwater (FOB) is primarily responsible for organizing, coordinating, and supporting FOB’s advocacy campaigns under the direction of the Executive Director. This position also assists with office management, public outreach, and general administration. The position will consist primarily of in-office work, with some field expeditions and outdoor work. Preference will be given to candidates with strong IT skills, organizing experience, and a college degree in environmental science, parks and recreation, public communications, or another related field.

Tasks and Expectations:

  • Advocacy
    • Organize and attend stakeholder groups, both digitally and in-person
    • Coordinate between government agencies and organizations
    • Create posters and other media in Canva, ArcGIS, Adobe Lightroom
    • Conduct topical research and condense info for public consumption
    • Write and publish articles; create reports with relevant experts
    • Film and edit short videos discussing issues
    • Manage and update issue-specific websites
    • Work in-the-field as necessary, sometimes navigating rugged terrain with your personal vehicle
  • Office Management
    • Maintain and upgrade IT systems and main website
    • Collect and enter donation data, receipts, and grants
    • Promote merch and other fundraising strategies
  • Public Outreach
    • Develop personal relationships with local businesses and people
    • Organize events in the community (walks, tables, etc)
    • Create and distribute FOB’s quarterly newsletter
  • Administration
    • Supervise staffers and/or AmeriCorps’ work and overall experience
    • Regularly touch base with Executive Director and Board Members and carry out their decisions
    • Research and propose improvements to organizational structures and systems
