Conservation Engagement Specialist (Interpretive Programs)

We are currently seeking a Conservation Engagement Specialist (Interpretive Programming) who is directly responsible for leading the development and delivery of educational guest engagement programs across Riverbanks Zoo & Garden. As a direct report to the Conservation Engagement Manager, models exceptional guest engagement, support part-time staff and volunteers, and contributes to content creation, program consistency, and evaluation. The Specialist ensures all interpretive programming enhances the guest experience while creating connections and inspiring actions to impact wildlife and wild places. 

Essential Functions:

  • Leading the design, delivery, and coordination of daily guest engagement programs including scheduled talks, animal experiences, tours, and interpretive cart stations. 
  • Developing and updating program content that is accurate, inclusive, and aligned with conservation messaging priorities. 
  • Modeling excellent guest service and interpretive techniques for staff and volunteers. 
  • Coaching instructors and volunteers in audience engagement, storytelling, and communication strategies. 
  • Assisting with resource creation and management including interpretive scripts, signage, props, and leading tools. 
  • Supporting part-time staff and volunteers through daily logistics, check-ins, and informal mentoring. 
  • Collaborating with fellow Specialists and the Manager to ensure consistency across all programs and guest interactions. 
  • Communicating observations, opportunities, and challenges to the Conservation Engagement Manager. 
  • Participating in the planning and facilitation of special events, seasonal initiatives, and outreach programs as needed. 
  • Maintaining compliance with all safety protocols, animal welfare standards, and Riverbanks’ professional expectations. 
  • Other projects and duties as set forth by the Conservation Engagement Manager.

Education and Experience: High school diploma required. Bachelor’s degree in an education, science-related, or communication field preferred; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities. Minimum of one year of experience in informal education, interpretation, or guest engagement required. Experience working with animal ambassadors preferred. Excellent communication and public speaking skills required. Availability to work weekends, evenings, and holidays is essential. Must possess or be eligible for a valid SC driver’s license.
