Accompanist
DEFINITION:
Under the direction of the site/program administrator, and with direction from the classroom teacher, the accompanist will support student musicians in music classes and performances during the school day as well as in the evening and on weekends on and off campus.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform piano accompaniment for music groups in class, rehearsals, performances and special events.
- Drive a vehicle to off-campus performances and events; practice musical selections with individual students as needed.
- Utilize piano accompaniment to reinforce note learning and enhance student performance of musical selections.
- Assist teacher in providing instruction to individual or groups of students; reinforce lessons and instruction provided by the teacher.
- Assist students with understanding notes, rhythms and sheet music; assist with developing, implementing and conducting special music events and performances.
- Conduct sectional rehearsals; transpose assist student with preparing for concert solos and ensembles.
- Provide pitches for warm-up exercises.
- Assist students by answering questions, providing proper examples, friendly attitude and general guidance.
- Operate acoustic and electric pianos and related electronic equipment; operate standard office equipment such as a computer and copier as assigned.
- Assist with necessary classroom preparation for a positive classroom environment.
- Report progress regarding student performance and behavior.
- Other related tasks as required
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
- Any combination equivalent to: Experience and training which would indicate possession of the knowledge, skills and abilities listed herein.
- Completion of the 12th grade or equivalent; one year of college course work in music and experience with accompanying musicians.
- Additional experience may be considered in lieu of education requirements.
Knowledge of:
- Knowledge of principles, methods and techniques of piano accompaniment, music theory, terminology, transposition and composition.
- Knowledge of piano music, arrangements and musical styles.
- Knowledge of interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
- Knowledge of operation of pianos, keyboards and related electronic equipment.
Ability to:
- Ability to perform piano accompaniment for musical groups in class, rehearsals and performance in a variety of forms – classical, popular, jazz, folk, etc.
- Read music including an open score and changes.
- Improvise and transpose; sight read music rapidly and accurately.
- Ability to identify conductor signals and vocal intonations and adjust accompaniment appropriately.
- Operate acoustic and electric pianos and related electronic equipment; demonstrate an understanding, patient and receptive attitude towards students.
- Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted during the performance of required duties, including school personnel, students, parents and the community.
- Maintain regular attendance.
