Deal Origination Intern

This internship offers meaningful exposure to deal origination, relationship management, and business development within a fast-growing private investment firm. Interns work directly alongside junior and senior origination professionals and are encouraged to bring new ideas and improve existing processes.

Conferences & Events

  • Support preparation for industry conferences (e.g., ACG events) by researching and prioritizing attendees based on relevance to deal sourcing efforts — evaluating firms for potential collaboration and deal flow potential
  • Draft outreach messaging for meeting requests, communicating Star Mountain's investment criteria and value proposition in a compelling and targeted way
  • Send meeting invitations and coordinate scheduling logistics ahead of conferences
  • Manage post-event follow-ups on deal opportunities and relationship touchpoints, supporting both junior analysts and senior team members with scheduling and next steps

Relationship Management & Outreach

  • Mine internal and external contact databases to support outbound email campaigns and telephone outreach, generating deal leads and meeting opportunities on behalf of the origination team
  • Build relationships with business owners, investment banks, private equity firms, accounting firms, commercial banks, and other financial constituents
  • Support account coverage efforts by ensuring relationships are assigned to the appropriate senior lead or MD, and that coverage is current and well-maintained

Deal Flow & Marketing Support

  • Assist with deal flow tracking and management, ensuring opportunities are logged and progressing through the pipeline
  • Support broader marketing initiatives including deal announcements and firm communications

Process Improvement & Innovation

  • Leverage AI tools (e.g., Claude, ChatGPT) and quickly adopt new platforms and systems as they are introduced
  • Proactively identify inefficiencies and propose improvements to existing workflows and processes — Star Mountain actively welcomes new ideas
  • Demonstrate a growth mindset: openness to training, feedback, and expanding your skill set within a dynamic team environment

Additional Responsibilities

The responsibilities listed above represent the core focus areas of this role, but this is a dynamic position within a fast-moving team. The intern will be expected to support the origination group more broadly as needs arise — pitching in on ad hoc projects, stepping up during busy periods, and adapting to evolving priorities. Flexibility, initiative, and a willingness to take on whatever is most useful to the team are essential.

  • Support ad hoc research, data gathering, and analysis as requested by senior and junior team members
  • Assist with internal administrative and operational tasks tied to deal origination and business development
  • Take on special projects or initiatives as they emerge throughout the internship

Career Development Note

As interns and junior professionals grow, they will have increasing opportunities to attend external events, represent the firm, and build their own network of industry relationships. The ability to engage comfortably with new people — from senior executives to peers — is a skill we actively develop and value.

Required Qualifications

  • Current undergraduate student (sophomore or junior preferred) enrolled in a relevant business, communications, or liberal arts program
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint); experience with CRM software a plus
  • Openness to using AI tools such as Claude and ChatGPT; comfort picking up new technologies quickly
  • History of professional and academic success with a high degree of intellectual curiosity
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; the confidence and personality to engage with senior business executives in both telephone and in-person settings
  • Highly collaborative with the ability to work effectively alongside professionals at all levels, internally and externally
  • Organized, detail-oriented, punctual, and proactive — able to manage multiple priorities simultaneously and meet deadlines

What We Value Above All

  • A positive, solutions-oriented attitude in every interaction
  • Curiosity and openness to learning in a fast-paced environment
  • Comfort starting conversations with people you've never met
  • The drive to identify problems and suggest improvements proactively
  • Reliability: doing what you say you'll do, when you say you'll do it
  • Hunger to grow your career and build long-term industry relationships

Tips for a Strong Application

  • Highlight any experience with outreach, sales, relationship management, or client-facing roles — even informal ones
  • Mention specific tools you've used: CRM platforms, Microsoft Office, AI tools, or research databases
  • If you've organized events, managed communications, or led a project, tell us about it — these translate directly to this role
  • A cover letter is your chance to show us how you communicate and why Star Mountain specifically interests you
