Camp Counselor

These small group leaders are responsible for a group of campers and stay in cabins, lodges, tents, yurts, houseboats or covered wagons. Counselors change areas each week and enjoy a variety of ages, programs, and leadership experiences throughout the summer. These include on-site camping programs, off-site travel and adventure trips, and Day Camps in local churches. Counselors lead campers in games, group building activities, Bible studies, nature activities, hikes, meals, swimming, and worship. 

Salary: $350/week first year, plus $10 more/week for each year of service; Room and board included.

Responsible to the Program Director

General Responsibilities

• Work with fellow staff to assure that the Ewalu Summer Youth Program proceeds according to the mission, objectives, and methods established by the Ewalu Board.
• Act as a small group leader for up to 10 campers each week.
• Share the gospel with a group of campers by witnessing (in words and deed) to the assurance that we are justified by grace through faith in Jesus Christ.

Principle Duties

• Take an active part in the general camp program.
• Teach, nurture, and sustain individual campers in their Christian faith through camp programming.
• Work with and take direction from the Program Director and leadership staff.
• Assist campers in exploring self-identity through relationships with others, nature, and God.
• Develop self-reliance and resourcefulness by providing experiences and instruction in skills that make it possible to live as more effective persons, primarily through small group, intimate, face-to-face relationships with other youngsters of the same age.
• Protect the camper from physical injury.  Maintain a safe and clean camp and cabin environment.
• Exhibit and encourage respect and care for camp property and all of God’s creation.

Qualifications

• At least 18 years old. One year of college or equivalent experience.
• Ability and willingness to work with campers in a one-to-one, small group, and large group situations.
• Interest in and enjoyment of camping.
• Ability and willingness to share personal faith and work with others in a ministry of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
• The ability to work cooperatively with 2-50 other staff people in an intense, close environment.
• Knowledge and support of Ewalu’s mission as a part of the whole body of Christ.
• Knowledge of Ewalu’s Summer Program and recreational philosophy.
• Experience and ability to work with people (staff and campers)
• Respect for and consideration of people and the environment.
• Fair-mindedness and impartiality.
• Comfortable speaking and leading in front of a group.
• Competence and maturity.
• Stability and good judgment.
• Punctuality.
