Peer Mentor
As a Peer Mentor, you will use your lived experience to empower current and former foster youth throughout San Diego County. This role focuses on building authentic relationships, promoting youth leadership, and strengthening connections to community opportunities. Peer Mentors serve as trusted supporters who encourage youth engagement, amplify youth voice, and help create meaningful pathways to success through mentoring, advocacy, leadership development, and community partnerships. Peer Mentors will support collaborative initiatives that improve outcomes for foster youth while helping develop the next generation of youth leaders.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Develop and maintain supportive, strengths-based relationships with current and former foster youth, serving as a trusted peer mentor and positive role model.
Facilitate meaningful youth engagement through mentoring, alumni programming, leadership initiatives, workshops, and community-based activities.
Support the planning, implementation, and ongoing development of the Youth Advisory Board by assisting with recruitment, meeting facilitation, leadership development, and youth participation.
Represent Promises2Kids at community meetings, collaborative initiatives, and public events, elevating the voice and lived experiences of foster youth through advocacy and partnership.
Assist with outreach, recruitment, and engagement efforts to increase participation in alumni programming.
Coordinate and support youth-focused events, workshops, service projects, and community engagement opportunities.
Maintain accurate and timely documentation, program records, and data entry in accordance with agency policies and reporting requirements.
Build and maintain collaborative relationships with internal staff, community partners, volunteers, and other stakeholders to support program goals and positive youth outcomes.
Participate in regular supervision, staff meetings, agency trainings, and professional development opportunities to strengthen knowledge and enhance program quality.
Uphold agency policies, maintain participant confidentiality, and perform all responsibilities in accordance with applicable federal, state, and county regulations.
This position is expected to maintain flexibility in scheduling and is expected to work some evenings and weekends to be available to meet participants' needs.
Regular attendance of at least 20 hours per week is an essential function of this position.
This position involves direct and indirect interaction with children and youth.
Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Lived experience in foster care required.
21 years or older and able to clear a DOJ/Federal Background and CACI Check
Relevant experience working with transitional age youth or in a similar supportive role.
Experience with youth leadership, advisory boards, alumni engagement, outreach, or program planning preferred.
Strong organizational skills with a focus on accurate and timely documentation.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain professional relationships.
Commitment to ongoing professional development and training.
Flexible working hours to accommodate documentation, training, and event deadlines.
Must possess reliable transportation, current driver’s license in good standing, car registration, and auto insurance.
Must successfully complete and maintain all required background clearances throughout employment, including compliance with ongoing background monitoring, in accordance with organizational standards and applicable California law.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
This position primarily operates in a professional office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets.
Frequently requires sitting or standing for extended periods.
May occasionally require lifting and carrying materials (up to 50 lbs) for events, programs, or office needs.
May occasionally involve setup and breakdown of equipment in both indoor and outdoor environments.
May frequently require walking long distances, standing for extended periods, and working on uneven surfaces or in varying weather conditions.
Must be able to communicate effectively in person, over the phone, and via email.
Visual and auditory acuity are required to perform essential job functions including reading printed and digital materials and interacting with others.
The employee may be required to move throughout the office to access equipment, files, and interact with team members.
May frequently be required to operate a motor vehicle safely for extended periods and must be able to sit for prolonged periods while driving.
Visual and auditory abilities are necessary to ensure safe operation of vehicles and awareness of road conditions.
