AFTERNOON TEACHERS

Department: Early Childhood Learning Center
Reports To: Early Childhood Director/Assistant Director
Status: Part-time (2:00 pm to 6:00 pm)
Pay Range: $18.00–$19.00 per hour, based on education, credentials, relevant experience, and demonstrated qualifications

Position Summary

The Afternoon Teacher works as an essential member of the classroom team to create a safe, nurturing, engaging, and developmentally appropriate environment for young children.

The Afternoon Teacher supports the classroom teachers with classroom routines, activities, supervision, and care of children. The Afternoon Teacher is expected to actively engage with children, contribute to the classroom community, follow established classroom expectations, and work collaboratively with the classroom teachers and other ECLC staff.

Education, Training & Experience

Candidates must meet applicable Alabama licensing and program requirements.

Qualifications may include:

• CDA Credential with significant early childhood classroom experience.
• Associate's degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or a related field with relevant classroom experience; or
• Demonstrated experience working with young children in a group classroom setting.
• Experience planning and implementing developmentally appropriate curriculum.
• Experience communicating effectively with families and working collaboratively with classroom teams.
• Demonstrated interest in continuing education and professional growth.

• Understanding of the basic developmental needs of young children.
• Ability to interact warmly, respectfully, and appropriately with children.

• Ability to follow classroom routines, schedules, and direction classroom teachers and administrative staff.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Provide children with a safe, loving, and nurturing environment.
• Actively supervise and engage with children throughout the day.
• Assist with implementation of curriculum and classroom activities.
• Participate in developmentally appropriate experiences including art, music, language, science, math, movement, and dramatic play.
• Support children's physical, emotional, social, and cognitive development.
• Follow classroom routines, schedules, and expectations established by the Lead Teacher.
• Use positive and developmentally appropriate behavior guidance.
• Assist with meals, diapering, toileting, rest time, transitions, and other daily care routines as appropriate.
• Help maintain a classroom environment that is safe, clean, organized, and inviting.
• Assist with preparation of classroom materials and activities.
• Communicate appropriately and professionally with children, families, and staff.
• Work cooperatively with the Lead Teacher and other classroom staff.
• Attend required staff meetings, training, professional development, and ECLC events.
• Follow all ECLC safety, supervision, health, and emergency procedures.
• Maintain confidentiality regarding children, families, and staff.
• Assist with maintaining common areas of the ECLC.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Lead Teacher or Early Childhood Director.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to lift and carry infants, toddlers, or preschool-age children up to 50 pounds and sit, stand, bend, kneel, and actively participate in children's activities throughout the day.

Compensation Philosophy

Placement within the $18.00–$19.00 hourly range is determined by education, credentials, relevant early childhood experience, demonstrated classroom skills, and overall qualifications. Employees are encouraged to pursue additional education and credentials that support professional growth and advancement.
