About the Role
The Adult Probation Department exists to promote the administration of justice and keep communities safe. The work isn't abstract — it's direct, daily contact with people navigating the criminal justice system, holding them accountable while helping them make real, lasting changes in their lives.
This is a classified civil service position included in a voluntary recognition bargaining unit (union), which may include union dues.
What you'll do
- Conduct pre-sentence and other investigations for the Court of Common Pleas, preparing accurate, thorough reports for judicial review.- Supervise a caseload of clients granted supervision by the Court, ensuring they meet all court-ordered conditions.- Monitor compliance with supervision requirements — employment, treatment, community service, financial obligations, and more.- Apply evidence-based practices to assess risk, identify needs, and connect clients with appropriate services and interventions.- Maintain detailed case records and documentation in accordance with department standards.- Coordinate with judges, attorneys, law enforcement, treatment providers, and community organizations.- Respond to violations and prepare violation reports; appear in court as required.- Work to reduce recidivism by encouraging accountability and supporting positive behavioral change.
About you
- Genuine interest in criminal justice, public safety, and working directly with a high-need population.- Ability to manage a caseload independently, prioritize competing demands, and meet deadlines.- Strong written and verbal communication skills — you'll write a lot of reports and spend a lot of time talking to people.- Sound judgment and the ability to make decisions under pressure.- Comfortable working in a structured, regulated environment with clear legal and ethical boundaries.
Requirements
- Must successfully complete a six (6) month probationary period following hire.- Must obtain state-mandated Probation Officer certification within six (6) months of hire.

This is onsite work in a court-affiliated government setting. Caseloads can be demanding and the work involves regular contact with individuals who may be in crisis or non-compliant. It requires professionalism, consistency, and a genuine commitment to the department's mission.
