Special Education In-Home Tutor: Jean Baptiste Household
We are seeking a patient, experienced, and dedicated Special Education Tutor to support our 1st-grade daughter who has autism, a language delay, and is currently working below grade level.
The ideal candidate will utilize structured, evidence-based methods and multisensory approaches to make school materials accessible, bridge academic gaps, and assist with daily homework. We are looking for someone who excels at building trust, fostering communication, and turning learning into an engaging, positive experience.
Key Responsibilities
- Academic & Homework Support: Guide our child through daily 1st-grade homework assignments, breaking down complex instructions into manageable, stress-free steps.
- Goal Setting & Progress Assessment: Prepare structured monthly learning goals and conduct regular monthly assessments to measure progress, adapt teaching strategies, and share updates with parents.
- Comprehension & Modification: Review school materials and adapt them using specialized teaching strategies to match our child's current developmental and academic level.
- Language & Communication Support: Integrate speech- and language-supportive techniques (such as visual schedules, augmentative supports, or clear contextual cues) to encourage expressive and receptive communication during lessons.
- Skill & Behavioral Building: Implement autism-informed strategies (e.g., positive reinforcement, sensory breaks, predictable routines, and emotional regulation cues) to maintain focus and engagement.
- Progress Tracking: Maintain open communication with parents regarding milestones, challenges, and effective strategies used during sessions.
This is a great position for someone wanting hands-on teaching and evelopment expeience with a child.
Location: In-home
Schedule: 3 sessions per week, 2 hours per session
Timing: Afternoon/evening slots.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Current Student: Enrolled at the University of Missouri (Mizzou), preferably majoring in Special Education, Communication Sciences and Disorders, Elementary Education, or a related field (Junior or Senior preferred).
- Experience: Prior experience working with children on the autism spectrum, individuals with developmental disabilities, or students with language delays.
- Skills: Strong working knowledge of modified curricula, specialized learning tools, and assistive supplies tailored for early elementary students with learning and developmental differences
- Traits: Highly patient, creative, adaptable, strong creative problem-solving skills, warm, encouraging communication style, and enthusiastic about supporting neurodivergent learners.
- Reliability: Punctual, professional, and dependable with transportation to our home.
