English Language Arts Guide
ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS GUIDE
Phase3 Lab School | Redlands, California Part-time | Four mornings per week, two hours per day | $30 to $35 per hour
The Job
Phase3 Lab School seeks a part-time guide to develop reading, writing, and reasoning in a small group of middle and high school students. You will assess each student, close their gaps, and build the skills that make every other subject possible. Eight hours a week, a handful of students, and real relationships.
Why This Work Is Hard, and Why It Matters
Most students do not like to write. Writing forces a person to slow down, organize their thinking, and commit to a claim they must defend. Deep reading demands the sustained attention that short-form video erodes every day. We want a guide who treats that difficulty as the point, not the problem.
Phase3 is not a conventional school. It is a human development system that happens to take the form of a school, serving children from eighteen months through high school graduation.
How We Work: The Tutorial Model
Phase3 groups students by readiness, not by grade. A sixth grader and a ninth grader may work on the same skill; two ninth graders may work on entirely different ones. Our approach borrows from the Oxford and Cambridge tutorial tradition: assess where each student stands, close gaps before moving on, and build every skill to mastery. A student who can write one clear, well-supported paragraph owns more than a student who has skimmed a dozen novels.
Our guides work inside the Phase3 system, follow a Phase3 scope and sequence, and build lasting relationships with their students. As enrollment grows, this role has the potential to expand.
What You Will Do
Guide a small group of students (fewer than ten middle schoolers and one or two high schoolers) in reading, writing, literature, and reasoning through writing
Assess each student's current level and close foundational gaps before advancing
Follow the Phase3 English Language Arts scope and sequence, which prioritizes mastery over coverage
Support ninth-grade students enrolled in a University of California English course, and older students enrolled in college-level English courses
Provide focused support for students with significant foundational gaps, including vocabulary development
Give specific, honest feedback on student writing, primarily during sessions
Build genuine relationships with students, because a reluctant reader rarely opens a book for an adult they do not trust
Coordinate with the Middle School Guide and Head of School, and share student progress with families through periodic written updates
What We Are Looking For
We are not looking for someone who already knows everything. We are looking for someone who loves reading and writing, understands why they matter, and can make a reluctant twelve-year-old care about them too.
You are a good fit if:
You read widely and write well, and you can explain why good writing works
You believe relationship comes first, and that curiosity follows trust
You find reluctant readers and writers interesting rather than frustrating
You can individualize: one student needs vocabulary work while another needs help structuring a college-level argument, and you can serve both in the same morning
You value mastery over coverage
You give honest feedback without shame
You are reliable without exception
You welcome coaching and keep refining your craft
You are not a good fit if:
You prefer to lecture and leave
You measure progress by pages covered rather than skills mastered
You believe students should be protected from difficult work
Qualifications
Required:
Bachelor's degree in English, literature, writing, or a related field
Strong writing ability of your own (a writing sample is part of the application)
Ability to pass a Live Scan background check
Current TB clearance, and MMR and Pertussis (DTaP) immunization documentation
CPR and First Aid certification within 30 days of hire (we can help arrange training)
Highly valued:
Experience working with adolescents
Experience with struggling readers, foundational literacy, or vocabulary instruction
Experience with college-level composition
Familiarity with Montessori or Positive Discipline
Spanish language ability
Compensation and Schedule
Hourly rate: $30 to $35, commensurate with experience
Schedule: Four mornings per week, two hours per day (approximately eight hours per week)
Academic year employment, with potential for expanded hours as enrollment grows
A consistent morning schedule pairs well with graduate study, writing, tutoring, or afternoon commitments elsewhere.
Why This Work Matters
Conventional schools treat English as a subject. We treat it as the training ground for clear thinking. The student who learns to read a difficult text patiently, and to write an argument that holds up under scrutiny, carries that capacity into every domain of life.
You will work with the same small group of students over time and know each of them well. You will watch a student who once avoided writing begin to reach for it. Few roles offer that kind of visible, lasting impact in eight hours a week.
How to Apply
Send an email to careers@phase3.school with:
Your resume
A short writing sample of your own (an essay, article, or any piece you are proud of)
A few sentences answering: How do you get a reluctant student to care about reading or writing?
Your availability
We respond promptly and welcome a classroom visit before you decide whether this role fits you.
