Gym and Education Director
The Little Gym of Johnston
Trade the 25-kid roster and the grading pile for a room of 10 and a job that prioritizes play. The Little Gym of Johnston is looking for a full-time Gym Director with a teaching background to lead our programs, our team, and our classroom standards.
Why This Role Fits a Teacher
- You already know how to plan a lesson, manage a room, and hold a group's attention. That's the job.
- You're not building curriculum from scratch. You're teaching from a proven curriculum, refined over 40 years, with lesson plans mapped out for every age and every week of the year, plus a full digital resource library every team member is trained on.
- As you get comfortable, creating additional curriculum and making adjustments becomes part of the role.
- This is a full-time, year-round role.
- Small class sizes (kids ages 4 months to 12 years) and amazing co-workers. Positive team culture is critical to our success and the longevity of our team of 18!
- Real management experience: you'll hire, train, and lead a team of instructors, not just teach solo.
About Us
The Little Gym of Johnston is a children's enrichment and movement center at 5260 Merle Hay Rd, serving hundreds of weekly members across 35 classes, events, and parties. We help kids ages 4 months through 12 years build confidence and skills through structured, curriculum-based classes, camps, and events: the same kind of purposeful, developmentally-minded teaching you already do.
Position Summary
The Gym Director owns how our classroom experience comes to life: delivering our established curriculum well, leading the instructors who teach it, and upholding the standards behind both. This is a leadership role built for someone with real teaching experience, planning lessons, managing a classroom, and leading adults. You'll set the bar for how every class gets taught and run the team that delivers it.
What You'll Do
Teach and Prep Great Classes
- Teach great classes using our established curriculum, and set the standard for what great teaching looks like at TLG Johnston
- Prep lessons well: know the material, the milestones, and the flow for every class, every week
- Hold the team accountable to the same lesson prep standards
- As you grow into the role, help create additional curriculum and make adjustments to existing content
Lead the Team
- Hire, train, and coach instructors and front desk staff
- Run onboarding and ongoing skill development for the teaching team
- Hold quarterly staff reviews and give constructive feedback and celebrate wins
- Handle discipline: address performance and conduct issues, document as needed, and loop in ownership when appropriate
Own the Schedule
- Build and manage the staff schedule, including collecting availability and covering gaps
- Provide direct coverage on nights and weekends as needed
Run Events and Operations
- Plan and run member events, birthday parties, and seasonal programming (camps, open houses, promotions)
- Partner with ownership on member experience and standards
- Keep the gym floor safe, organized, and well-run!
What We're Looking For
Required
- Comfortable and confident moving your own body. You'll be teaching gymnastics-based skills, but no prior gymnastics experience is required, just preferred. We train you on spotting technique and skill progressions, from parent/child movement for babies through grade-school skills like beam cartwheels, pullovers, aerials, and back walkovers
- A background in teaching, coaching, or instruction: classroom teaching, gymnastics, dance, early childhood education, youth sports coaching, or similar.
- Experience managing or supervising a team
- Strong organizational skills: you can plan lessons, build a schedule, and track details across a large roster
- Comfortable giving direct feedback and handling discipline conversations
- Available full-time with flexibility for evenings and weekends
- Enjoys leading a room of young children and coaching adults
Nice to Have
- Experience with curriculum design or lesson planning
- Background in gymnastics, dance, PE, or movement-based instruction
- Experience in a children's enrichment, fitness, or education setting
- Event planning experience
Schedule
Full-time. Core hours are built around our class schedule, which runs into evenings on weeknights and includes weekend classes and birthday parties. This role requires regular evening and weekend availability to provide coverage: it's not necessarily a standard 9-to-5.
Compensation and Benefits
Salary: $45,000 to $60,000 per year, based on experience.
- Health insurance support if needed
- Performance-based bonuses
- 50% off own child enrollment
- Team uniform provided
- Ongoing training and professional development
