Supervises: Music employees, accompanists, section leaders, and contracted musicians, as assigned

Help lead Wellspring Church in faithful, Christ-centered worship

Wellspring Church in Madison, Mississippi, is seeking a full-time Director of Music Ministries to provide spiritual, musical, and organizational leadership for the church’s music ministry.

Working closely with the senior pastor, the director will plan and lead music that supports the proclamation of Scripture, the themes of worship, the Christian year, and the theological convictions of the Global Methodist Church.

This is an opportunity for a gifted Christian leader to develop an intergenerational music ministry that glorifies God, proclaims the gospel, forms disciples, encourages congregational participation, and strengthens the worshiping life of Wellspring Church.

About the Position

The Director of Music Ministries will lead and develop a comprehensive ministry that may include adult choir, worship teams, vocalists, instrumentalists, children’s and youth ensembles, and special musical events.

We are looking for more than an accomplished musician. The ideal candidate will understand music as Christian ministry and will cultivate worship marked by biblical faithfulness, musical excellence, congregational participation, spiritual formation, and Christian community.

Primary Responsibilities

Worship Planning and Leadership

The director will collaborate with the senior pastor and other worship leaders to plan unified, biblically grounded services. Responsibilities include selecting and leading music for weekly worship, seasonal services, funerals, weddings, and other special occasions.

The director will also help coordinate the order and flow of worship, ensure that song texts are biblically and theologically sound, and provide capable substitute leadership when absent.

Ensembles and Volunteers

The director will lead and develop the adult choir and other assigned ensembles while recruiting, training, scheduling, and encouraging vocalists and instrumentalists.

Rehearsals should foster preparation, excellence, mutual respect, spiritual growth, and Christian community. The director will equip new musicians and worship leaders so that the ministry continues to grow and does not depend on only a few participants.

Children and Youth

The director will create sustainable opportunities for children and youth to participate in the musical life of Wellspring. This includes collaborating with children’s and student ministry leaders, developing young musicians, recruiting adult volunteers, and involving younger participants in worship and seasonal programs.

Congregation and Community

The director will encourage active congregational singing, introduce new music thoughtfully, and honor the church’s musical heritage while developing faithful new expressions of worship.

As resources permit, the director may also develop concerts, hymn festivals, workshops, retreats, and other events that support community engagement, evangelism, and congregational growth.

Administration and Stewardship

The director will oversee the music ministry budget, schedules, communications, music library, instruments, equipment, licenses, employees, and contracted musicians. The position also includes participation in staff and worship-planning meetings and collaboration with the church’s communications and technical ministries.

Required Qualifications

The successful candidate will demonstrate:

A mature Christian faith and a clear understanding of music as Christian ministry

Commitment to Scripture and the historic Christian faith

Ability to support the doctrine and mission of Wellspring Church and the Global Methodist Church

Successful experience leading music in congregational worship

Strong conducting, teaching, rehearsal, and ensemble-development skills

Proficiency in at least one principal worship instrument

Ability to read music and prepare or adapt arrangements

Familiarity with traditional and contemporary Christian worship music

Strong interpersonal, organizational, communication, and administrative skills

Ability to recruit, equip, encourage, and retain volunteers

Wisdom and patience when navigating differences in musical preference

Availability for Sunday services, evening rehearsals, seasonal services, and occasional church events

Ability to complete required background checks and Safe Sanctuaries requirements

Preferred Qualifications

Preference may be given to candidates with:

A bachelor’s degree in music, church music, worship arts, or a related discipline

Five or more years of leadership experience in congregational music ministry

Experience directing choirs and contemporary worship teams

Familiarity with Wesleyan theology, Methodist worship, hymnody, and the Christian liturgical year

Experience developing music ministries for children and youth

Experience supervising employees or contracted musicians

Competence with music-notation, worship-planning, presentation, or scheduling software

Experience with worship technology, livestreaming, or sound production

Graduate study or advanced professional training in music, worship, theology, or ministry

Equivalent professional experience may be considered in place of a particular academic degree.

Schedule and Working Environment

This position includes regular Sunday and evening responsibilities, with additional demands during Advent, Christmas, Lent, Holy Week, Easter, and other significant seasons.

Wellspring will work with the director to establish clear office and rehearsal hours, appropriate flexibility during demanding ministry seasons, and at least one full day away from work each week. The church will provide suitable office and rehearsal space, access to instruments and equipment, and approved funding for professional development.
