In the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine the mission is to improve the health and well-being of the citizens of eastern North Carolina and beyond by delivering high-quality pathology services, by providing exemplary education, and by creating new knowledge through research.

Job Duties:

This faculty member would align within the Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (HLA) Laboratory in the Department of Pathology, reporting directly to the department chair. The HLA laboratory is part of the ECU Health Medical Center, a medical center with an active Level I adult and pediatric trauma service as well as comprehensive clinical specialty services including hematology/oncology, cardiovascular surgery, kidney, kidney-pancreas solid organ transplantation. The successful candidate will join a clinical pathology group with 7 other clinical pathology faculty. The successful candidate will interpret HLA typing, HLA antibody screening, and virtual/physical crossmatching, provide clinical consultation for solid organ transplant program, maintain compliance standards, and manage standard operating procedures. As a faculty member within the Brody School of Medicine at ECU, teaching pathology residents and other clinical residents/fellows, and active participation in departmental conferences, quality and institutional committees is expected. Clinical research opportunities exist, but are not required.

Fixed Term (12-month) or Tenure Track position available at the title / rank of Clinical Assistant Professor, Assistant Professor, Clinical Associate Professor, or Associate Professor.

Employment in this position provides eligibility to participate in the UNC Optional Retirement Program (ORP) which offers matching employer contributions and employee control of investment choices, along with eligibility to participate in various Voluntary Supplemental Retirement Plans (401k, 403b, 457). This position is not eligible to participate in the NC Teachers' and State Employees' Retirement System (TSERS). Additionally, this position offers multiple voluntary options for Medical, Dental, Vision, and Life Insurance as well as various supplemental plans including Critical Illness, Flexible Spending Accounts, Cancer, and Disability.

While this position is not automatically eligible for the NC Teachers' and State Employees' Retirement System (TSERS), new hires transferring from another North Carolina state agency and current ECU employees transferring internally who had been enrolled in TSERS in their previous employment will continue participation in TSERS. These individuals may be able to elect to participate in ORP if they had not been offered that option at the time of their initial enrollment into TSERS.

Employment is contingent upon the availability of funds.

Minimum Education/Experience:

MD, DO, or PhD from an appropriately accredited institution, or completed foreign medical education accepted and recognized by ECFMG Certification.

Training in histocompatibility and immunogenetics with ASHI certification is required.

MD/DO applicant must be Board Certified or Board Eligible in Clinical Pathology or Anatomic Pathology/Clinical Pathology by the American Board of Pathology.

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation:

MD/DO – Eligibility for an unrestricted North Carolina medical license. Board Certified or eligible for board certification.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education:

Additional training or experience in clinical pathology (e.g. blood bank, chemistry, hematopathology, microbiology, molecular pathology, and/or pathology informatics).
