Investment Analyst
About the role
PortfolioFuture builds investment research products around a difficult problem: helping investors determine whether an ETF or mutual fund deserves attention, understand what drives its returns, and identify better alternatives.
The Investment Analyst begins where our quantitative research leaves off.
We identifies funds and managers that deserve deeper research. You will study the people, investment process, and decisions behind those results, and speak directly with portfolio managers, strategists, and investment teams to understand what cannot be learned from returns alone.
The role requires strong judgment, deep preparation, and the ability to ask questions that go beyond what is available in a factsheet, presentation, or standard due-diligence questionnaire.
What you’ll work on
• Research portfolio managers, investment teams, and strategies identified through PortfolioFuture’s fund research.
• Study investment philosophy, research process, portfolio construction, risk management, trading, and implementation.
• Develop manager-specific questions based on PortfolioFuture’s quantitative findings.
• Participate in conversations with portfolio managers, CIOs, strategists, ETF issuers, and investment teams.
• Evaluate whether a manager’s explanation is consistent with the fund behavior PortfolioFuture observes independently.
• Investigate periods of outperformance, underperformance, portfolio change, and strategy evolution.
• Assess whether differentiated results reflect a repeatable investment capability, structural exposure, implementation choice, or another source.
• Research team structure, decision-making, capacity, succession, and material organizational changes.
• Compare managers and strategies that may look similar but differ meaningfully in how investment decisions are made.
• Turn manager conversations and independent research into clear investment conclusions.
What we’re looking for
• Strong interest in investment management, ETFs, mutual funds, and portfolio managers.
• Ability to understand the people, process, and decisions behind investment results.
• Strong analytical judgment and the ability to identify the questions that matter most.
• Ability to prepare for manager conversations deeply enough to move beyond information available in public materials.
• Understanding of portfolio construction, benchmarks, active management, risk, and performance evaluation.
• Ability to challenge an investment thesis professionally while remaining open to evidence that changes your view.
• Confidence communicating with experienced investment professionals.
• Strong research, writing, and communication skills.
• Intellectual curiosity, skepticism, and high standards for evidence.
Experience in asset management, manager research, investment consulting, fund research, or institutional investing is valuable but not required.
