Purpose:
Stewards Individual Placements, a division of Conservation Legacy, provides individuals with AmeriCorps service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural and cultural resources. 

Keweenaw National Historical Park’s mission is to preserve the nationally significant historical and cultural sites, structures, and districts of the Keweenaw Peninsula. The Interpretation and Education Division at Keweenaw National Historical Park strives to provide memorable and meaningful learning and recreational experiences, foster development of a personal stewardship ethic, and broaden public support for preserving park resources.  Keweenaw National Historical Park works with partners of the park, including 22 heritage site partners, to share the nationally significant story of copper in the Keweenaw area of Michigan.

Stewards Individual Placements, in partnership with Keweenaw National Historical Park are seeking an AmeriCorps service member who will serve closely with the park's Interpretation & Education Team on content and updates to the park’s digital media (social, app, web), print media (park’s newspaper, walking tour booklets, signs), and increased access to documents and media content.  This Member will also support with the development of an online 4th grade education program - collaborating with the park, park partners, and local 4th grade teachers. 


The selected AmeriCorps Member will have opportunities to gain skills in writing, editing, photography, video production, NPS website content management and more! Additionally, the selected applicant for this position will have the opportunity to learn about visitor services and programing working with front-line ranger staff and volunteers in the visitor center; assisting with school field trip programs, and special events.


Description of Duties:

To achieve the goals of this position, the Media Member will add important resources to the park’s interpretive tools by working with staff and park partners to create and update content for digital and print mediums. They will integrate park interpretive themes into their work with the goal of connecting visitors to the copper story of the Keweenaw.  Specific duties include: 

  • Assist with digital media 
    • Social media, Park webpages, NPS app, Park videos
    • Collaborate with park staff and park partners on the Copper TRACES online 4th grade program
    • Collaborate with park staff to refine, update, and create new content for the NPS App
    • Collaborate with park staff to create social media content
  • Assist with print media 
    • Park newspaper, Walking tour booklets, Signs and information boards, Temporary exhibits
    • Collaborate with park staff to update or create print media project
  • Assist with visitor services, education, and public programs
    • Assisting in the Visitor Center
    • Supporting special events such as the Copper Dog Sled Race and Christmas in Calumet
    • Supporting school field trip programming
  • Capture video and images of the park and special events
    • Take photos and videos of the park and special events to be used for the website, social media, and print publications
    • Edit content for ADA access and include meta data for searchability

 

Qualifications:

  • Be a United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien
  • Be between the ages of 18 – 30, or up to age 35 with Veteran status
  • Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check
  • Commit to 26 weeks of service
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate in a variety of settings
  • Adaptability and capacity to work in a fluid environment
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
  • Availability to serve on occasional evenings and weekends for special events

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite programs are a plus, but not required
  • Experience with online communications and editing
  • Familiarity with social media platforms and writing for a variety of audiences
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Ability to drive with an insurable driving record

 Time Requirements:

  • Typically, this position is expected to serve Monday to Friday, 8:00am – 5:00pm, but exact service schedules may vary. A lunch break will not be counted towards AmeriCorps service 
  • May be required to work occasional evenings and weekends
  • Member may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their service term.

 

Orientation and Training:

  • Members will receive an orientation that includes training on AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities
  • Park-specific trainings include: Park history, orientation to park and partner sites, interpretation and interpretive writing, education theory, social media training and mentoring, content management system (CMS) training, NPS identity and accessibility standards


Benefits:

  • Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of $3697.50
  • Stipend of $750 a week (pre-tax, paid bi-weekly)
    • Includes $650 for Living Allowance + $100 for Additional Benefits
  • $1000 in Professional Development funds available
  • Numerous mentorship opportunities with a variety of park staff

 

Evaluation and Reporting:
As an AmeriCorps member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed the required number of hours, the member has satisfactorily completed assignments, and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service.  Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
