Research Experience for Undergraduates
Brooklyn College offers students who wish to pursue a Ph.D degree the opportunity to undertake a semester-long, scientific research training program in psychology and neuroscience.
Through funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF), 10-12 students who are from (but not limited to) historically underrepresented groups are selected each year to engage in an intensive, innovative, mentored research experience in clinical, cognitive, or behavioral psychology and neuroscience that involves:
- carrying out an independent research project under the supervision & guidance of a Brooklyn College faculty mentor in the Department of Psychology
- participating in scholarly didactics
- completing scientific ethics training
- disseminating research results in a poster presentation at the Brooklyn College Science Research Day.
Students participate and train in the REU program as members of their identified mentor’s labs. This requires giving presentations, assisting in on-going research experiments and other laboratory activities.
Formal discussions of professional issues will help students explore career paths and prepare for graduate school applications (e.g., taking the GREs, soliciting letters of recommendation, writing personal statements, preparing resumes).
To successfully complete this program, students will:
- devote 12-15 hours/week to laboratory research on-site at Brooklyn College
- devote 5-6 hours/week to didactic seminars.
- attend three seminars (here or elsewhere in the NY area)
*Acceptance into the REU program requires a commitment to the REU schedule of didactics, seminars and research. This means outside of the REU, participants are limited to no more than two classes at their institutions to allow sufficient time for research and didactics.
REU students are awarded a stipend of $3,100 to compensate for expenses/possible loss of financial aid (if financial aid is tied to number of credits)
The Spring 2027 REU program will take place late-January through mid-May.
