DC Student Organizer
Overview:
Our DC team is searching for 2 DC Student Organizers to recruit and train students across DC colleges & high school campuses to organize against authoritarianism, protect local autonomy & democracy, and advocate for statehood.
Our DC autonomy efforts began in late 2024 to support partners fighting to protect DC home rule, mobilize thousands of students to resist attacks on DC’s autonomy, and ensure the 700,000+ people of DC receive the same dignity & democracy afforded to the rest of the country. Our DC Autonomy efforts have also focused on protecting critical democracy reforms in our nation’s capital and supporting DC college students as they organize to demand their campuses not comply with authoritarian attacks on DC’s self-determination.
The ideal campaign organizer is self-driven, highly motivated to champion DC advocacy, understands the intersection of the fight for our democracy with other issues & identities (climate justice, access to healthcare, education, etc), and the role students need to play in championing systems that represent us.
In this role, you will:
- Work with DC based, national, and campus partners to build active student and youth representation and support for DC autonomy and statehood
- Researching & building relationships with campus/state-based pro-democracy groups to collaborate on shared campaign goals and build additional campaign support outside of DC.
- Recruiting & mobilizing students to join campaign actions, events, or trainings
- Organizing and supporting rapid response efforts to attacks on DC autonomy, often in coordination with local DC partners
- Help increase visibility of campaign work to local news & on social media
- Share campaign updates at weekly team meetings and regularly check-in with the DC Autonomy Lead Organizer and Organizing Coordinator about progress, barriers, and support needs
- Other campaign responsibilities as decided by leadership

- Capacity to work 10 hours/week on the above
- Willingness to learn & grow as an organizer
- Commitment to centering youth as we build a just & inclusive democracy
- Demonstrated initiative, ability to problem-solve, and respond to a rapidly-evolving organizing landscape
- Strong interpersonal, speaking, and writing skills
- Ability to work well in a coalition environment with a wide range of partner organizations
- (Nice to have) Ability to point to a past issue-based campaign you were a part of & helped win

About the Task Force for Democracy:
We’re a youth & volunteer-led team organizing students across 6 campaigns to demand a democracy that works for our generation — not billionaires & corporations! We work alongside movement partners to center young people in the fight against advancing autocracy.
We don’t focus on partisan politics or electing candidates. We organize to end inequities in our electoral system and win a democracy our generation can be proud of!
We know true democracy cannot only exist at the ballot box, but must be present in the workplace, and in our education. Our campaigns aim to end structural inequality across different areas of our democracy, and include: fighting voter suppression & money in politics, organizing students under autocracy, stopping a dangerous constitutional convention that would roll back our rights, using transparency laws to hold power accountable, and more!
