The Governor’s Internship Program is an exciting and unique opportunity for Minnesota students interested in public service. As an intern in the Office of Governor Walz and Lieutenant Governor Flanagan, you will gain insight into the various paths within public service and learn valuable skills to prepare you for your future career, all while seizing a unique opportunity to give back to the State of Minnesota.

Internship Program Details

The Governor’s Office Internship Program offers part-time internships during the fall and spring academic semesters, as well as the summer break.

Applications for Fall 2026 are due Thursday, September 24, 2026. (Start date: October 2026)

Our positions are unpaid and part-time, and interns must work a minimum of 12-15 hours a week. In order to be considered for an internship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Have a high school diploma or GED
  • Be 18 years or older

Internship Departments
Please review the department descriptions and candidate criteria before applying. Although we cannot guarantee placement in a specific department, applicants are encouraged to indicate their preferences on their application form, as this will help the Walz-Flanagan Administration learn their interests and find a strong fit.

Public Engagement
The Public Engagement Office serves as the first point of contact between the public and the Governor's Office. The office responds on behalf of the Governor to phone calls, emails, letters, and walk-ins from the people of Minnesota and works closely with state agencies to resolve constituent issues. The office also oversees the Governor's Office outreach to communities across Minnesota. Public engagement interns can expect to gain a first-hand look at how state government works and a rewarding experience helping those in need.

Communications
The Communications Department serves as the liaison between the Governor’s Office and the media. The department plays a vital role in crafting and disseminating the Walz-Flanagan Administration’s messaging and developing its communication strategy. Communications interns will help with monitoring and compiling press coverage and daily clips, drafting press releases and media advisories, developing social media and web content, and assisting with research.

Policy and Legislative Affairs
The Policy and Legislative Affairs Department focuses on moving the Governor’s legislative agenda forward by sustaining relationships with state, federal, and local elected officials, as well as advocacy groups. The department ensures the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and staff are fully informed about all legislative matters. Policy and Legislative Affairs interns will help track legislation in progress, research ongoing policy issues, and assist in handling legislative questions.
