YLC Self Study Language Program Tutor of Cantonese

POSITION INFORMATION: Yamada Language Center (YLC) Self Study Language Program (SSLP-LT 199) Language Tutor of Cantonese

Program Information 

The Yamada Language Center was founded in 1991 as a way of both centralizing and improving pedagogical and technological support for the 4000+ language teaching faculty and students at the University of Oregon.

Job Duties 

Language tutor will work closely with the SSLP coordinator and will: 

  • Assist in the development of an online, face-to-face, or hybrid (non-intensive) course of the indicated language 
  • Tutor and assist with instruction 2 hours a week
  • Prepare for sessions, 2 hours a week
  • Attend weekly 1 hour meetings
  • Coordinate with our department director and our SSLP program director to assist in preparing appropriate, progressive online learning materials 
    • The SSLP program director will evaluate each phase of these materials for fall, winter, and spring terms respectively 

Language being taught is decided ahead of time and will vary as a requirement. Examples: Farsi, Thai, Vietnamese, etc. This position is specific to Cantonese. 

Minimum Qualifications

The position is open to all native and/or near-native proficient speakers of the indicated languages who are willing to work closely with the program coordinator and gain new skills in tutoring their languages and culture: 

  • UO graduate students who do not have a GE position or have one less than .49 FTE 
  • UO employees 
  • UO undergraduate junior and/or senior students

Preferred Qualifications

  • Tutoring or assistance with tutoring experience (particularly language related) 
  • Experience with online tools (Zoom, Canvas, or other learning management systems)

Scheduling Information

  • Schedules will be published once per term before term start
  • One mandatory orientation near start date required
  • Hours per week: 2-5  

Appointment Information

  • Start date: As soon as possible or 9/28/2026
  • End date: 12/15/2026 with high possibility of reappointment each academic term
  • Reappointment is very possible for each term based on interest and availability, as well as programmatic funding. Please discuss any scheduling issues during your interview
