MIIA Fellow Internship

MIIA Fellow – College Internship

The Massachusetts Interlocal Insurance Association (MIIA) and the Massachusetts Municipal Association (MMA) are seeking a MIIA Fellow to join our team for a 12-week paid internship. This is an excellent opportunity for a college student who wants hands-on experience solving real problems for Massachusetts cities and towns.

About MIIA: The Massachusetts Interlocal Insurance Association (MIIA) is a membership service of the Massachusetts Municipal Association. As a mission-driven, member-led nonprofit, MIIA focuses on providing Massachusetts municipalities and other governmental entities with insurance-coverage alternatives, quality risk management, and wellness programs.

About MMA: The nonpartisan Massachusetts Municipal Association (MMA) provides an array of services to its member cities and towns statewide, including advocacy, education and training, research and analysis, and publications and information programs. As the voice of local government in Massachusetts, MMA works to advance the interests of all cities and towns.

About the position: Under the direction of the Member Communication Supervisor, the MIIA fellow contributes to departmental work supporting MIIA’s members and operations. Fellows are matched to a placement prior to their start date and are assigned either a strategic project, owned from scoping through a final presentation to MIIA leadership, or a support-focused placement centered on a department’s ongoing operational work. The MIIA Fellow meets weekly with the Member Communication Supervisor, who oversees supervision and priorities, and with an assigned Department Mentor, who provides subject-matter guidance on project work.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to assigned departmental work, which may include a strategic project owned from inception, scoping and through final presentation
  • Conduct research and analysis and develop practical, actionable recommendations
  • Produce professional deliverables such as written summaries, toolkits, process documentation, dashboards, or member-facing resources
  • Support department operations through reporting, documentation, communications and data work
  • Support recurring organizational needs including Salesforce and Recordsforce record updates, Legisway document management, and general administrative support
  • Meet weekly with Program Manager and with your Department Mentor
  • Attend and participate in the weekly MIIA professional skills academy
  • Where a capstone is part of the placement, deliver a final presentation to MIIA staff and leadership

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Participate in shadowing and introductions across MIIA departments
  • Assist with general office needs including mail, meeting preparation, and front desk support as needed
  • Participate in a mid-point review, end-of-term evaluation, and exit interview

What you’ll gain:

  • Real, finished work you can show a future employer
  • Experience presenting to senior leadership at a statewide organization
  • A working understanding of how Massachusetts municipalities actually operate
  • Hands-on exposure to professional tools including Salesforce and Microsoft 365
  • A professional network across an organization that serves cities and towns statewide

Qualifications: The candidate must be currently enrolled in a college, university, or certificate program. Strong written and verbal communication skills are required, along with the ability to work independently, manage a timeline, and meet deadlines. Comfort with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, is expected. We are looking for someone who is curious about how municipal government works and genuinely interested in public service, and who can commit to the full 12-week term.

Coursework in public policy, political science, risk management, business, finance, communications, marketing, data science, cybersecurity, environmental science, public health, or a related field is a plus but is not required.

Work environment: Our office is located in Boston's Government Center neighborhood. This is a paid, 12-week internship at 20 hours per week, offered in the fall, spring, or summer term, with a hybrid schedule of two days per week in the office. Compensation is $18–20 per hour based on academic level and relevant experience. If you are ready to spend a semester doing work that supports Massachusetts cities and towns, this position may be for you.

How to Apply: Please send a PDF of your cover letter and resume to: hr@mma.org
