After-School 1:1 Academic Tutor – Special Education Experience Preferred
Southern Angels is seeking a patient, dependable, and compassionate 1:1 Academic Tutor to start as soon as possible. This position will provide individualized academic support to a student who has learning difficulties and benefits from additional instruction, repetition, encouragement, and hands-on teaching strategies.
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 3:30 p.m.–5:30 p.m.
Hours: Approximately 10 hours per week
Start Date: As soon as possible
The ideal candidate understands that students learn differently and can adjust instruction to meet the student where they are academically. We are looking for someone who is encouraging, consistent, creative, and committed to helping the student build academic skills, confidence, and independence.
Responsibilities:
Provide one-on-one tutoring and individualized academic support.
Assist with reading, writing, math, homework, and other academic areas as needed.
Break assignments and concepts into smaller, manageable steps.
Provide repetition, modeling, prompting, and guided practice.
Use visual, hands-on, differentiated, and multisensory teaching strategies.
Help strengthen study skills, organization, independence, and academic confidence.
Provide positive reinforcement and encouragement.
Monitor progress and communicate successes, concerns, and recommendations with the Southern Angels team.
Follow academic goals, accommodations, IEP/504 recommendations, or other individualized supports when applicable.
Maintain a positive, patient, professional, and supportive learning environment.
Minimum Requirements:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience working with children or students in education, tutoring, childcare, youth programs, or a related setting.
Strong reading, writing, and basic math skills.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Patient, dependable, punctual, and professional.
Comfortable supporting a student who may need additional processing time, repetition, redirection, and alternative teaching methods.
Must be consistently available Monday through Friday from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Must be willing to complete required background screening.
Preferred Qualifications:
Associate's or bachelor's degree in Education, Special Education, Psychology, Child Development, or a related field.
Current college students majoring in Education or Special Education are encouraged to apply.
Current or retired teachers are encouraged to apply.
Previous tutoring, intervention, paraprofessional, or special education experience.
Experience working with students with learning disabilities, ADHD, autism, developmental differences, IEPs, or 504 Plans.
Knowledge of differentiated or multisensory instruction.
