Legal Assistant

Legal Assistant

Position Summary

If you like a workday with variety, plenty of moving parts, and always something going on, you might fit right in at Basiga Law Firm, PC (“BLF”). We’re looking for a full-time Legal Assistant who will work primarily in our criminal law practice, supporting our attorneys and clients through matters that can be fast-moving, high-stakes, and incredibly important to the people involved. You’ll help keep cases moving, details organized, and our attorneys and clients supported—from talking with clients, courts, and prosecutor’s offices to preparing documents, managing case files, tracking deadlines, and keeping calendars on track. While your primary focus will be criminal matters, you’ll also have opportunities to support other areas of the firm as needed.

This is a full-time, hourly, non-exempt position working in person, generally 40 hours per week. The role includes minimal local travel and occasional work outside normal business hours when needed.

Who We Are

At BLF, we believe every client deserves to be heard. Our approach goes beyond legal expertise - we take the time to listen, understand each client’s unique circumstances, and provide thoughtful, compassionate guidance throughout the legal process.

We understand that legal matters can be complex and stressful. Whether a client is facing criminal charges or navigating a divorce, child custody matter, or other difficult legal situation, our team is committed to providing steady support, clear guidance, and strong representation every step of the way.

What You’ll Be Doing

As a Legal Assistant, you’ll work closely with our attorneys and team to keep cases moving and make sure important details don’t fall through the cracks. Your work will include:

Case and Legal Support.

Assist with pleadings, motions, discovery requests, correspondence, and other legal documents; assist with conducting legal research; and help attorneys prepare for legal matters and court appearances.

Case Management and Filing.

Organize and maintain client files; upload and update documentation in client management software; prepare and file documents with courts, other agencies, and clients; monitor deadlines and case progress; and provide updates to attorneys.

Scheduling and Administrative Support.

Coordinate meetings and court appearances; manage and maintain calendars and tasks; draft emails and correspondence; provide phone support; maintain records; and help with other administrative needs.

Client and Professional Communication.

Communicate professionally with clients, family members, witnesses, opposing counsel, prosecutor’s offices, court staff, and other professionals while maintaining strict confidentiality.

Team Support.

Participate in case reviews, staff meetings, firm activities, trainings, workshops, conferences, special events, and pitch in on other duties as needed.

What You’ll Bring to the Team

You’re a strong communicator who pays attention to the details and can stay organized while juggling multiple cases, shifting priorities, and competing deadlines. You’re comfortable handling phone calls and communicating professionally with clients and others, even when conversations may be difficult or stressful. You’re open-minded, respectful of different perspectives and life experiences, and believe everyone deserves to be treated fairly and have someone in their corner. You can work independently when needed while also being part of a team, and you’re willing to learn new things, take on new challenges, and adapt as the needs of the firm evolve.

You should be proficient with Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Word, and Excel. Knowledge of legal terminology, procedures, court rules, or our practice areas is a bonus, but we’re willing to teach the right person the legal side of the role. What matters most is that you’re willing to learn, ask questions, take initiative, and build your knowledge as you grow with the firm. Experience with document management systems or legal research tools such as LexisNexis or Westlaw, an associate’s degree in paralegal studies or a related field, or a paralegal certification such as NALA or NFPA is a bonus but not required.

Other Things You Should Know

At BLF, we expect team members to understand and support our vision, purpose, and core values. That means approaching your work with integrity and honesty, providing professional service to clients, taking initiative in your own growth and the firm’s growth, and leading by example.

Because this role works closely with clients and sensitive legal matters, confidentiality, professionalism, accuracy, and follow-through are essential. We expect our team members to:

  • Understand our vision. Take the time to learn who we are, what we do, and why it matters.
  • Develop Knowledge. Stay informed about legal matters and processes, as well as the services we provide.
  • Work as one team. Collaborate with respect, trust, and appreciation for each other’s differences.
  • Stay involved. Take part in meetings and team activities that help us grow and stay connected.
  • Follow through. Complete tasks on time and with care.
  • Protect privacy. Maintain confidentiality in everything you do, in line with both the law and our policies.
  • Do things the right way. Follow BLF’s policies, procedures, and processes and help others do the same.

Working Conditions and Requirements

  • Schedule: Full-time, generally 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. EST. Occasional work beyond normal business hours may be required.
  • Location: This is an in-person position. Minimal local travel may be required for activities such as filing or delivering documents, attending court hearings, or training.
  • Environment: Most work is performed indoors at a computer or by telephone. The role includes frequent interruptions and interaction with clients, court personnel, and the public, and the workload may be fast-paced when deadlines must be met.
  • Pre-Employment Requirements: Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a criminal background check and drug screening. A criminal record or other information identified through screening will not automatically disqualify a candidate. Results will be evaluated individually based on the position, applicable law, and other relevant circumstances. Random drug testing may also be required.
  • Physical Demands: Ability to sit or stand for extended periods, communicate effectively in person, by telephone, and electronically, and occasionally lift up to 25 pounds with or without assistance.
