What You Will Contribute

The Badger Meter Internship Program provides hands-on, real-world experience to students through projects that make a difference. In addition to your project work, you will have the opportunity to participate in our robust Intern Program focused on Badger Meter culture, professional development, community outreach, and a final capstone project.

As a Firmware Test Engineering Intern, you will work under the mentorship of experienced firmware and test engineers to gain practical experience in firmware development, software testing, debugging, and automated test development. You will support the testing and validation of firmware used in Badger Meter's innovative smart water technology products.

This internship provides an opportunity to apply classroom knowledge to real-world engineering challenges while learning how firmware is developed, tested, documented, and supported throughout the product development process.

This is an onsite internship at our Milwaukee facility and is expected to be 40 hours per week during the summer internship period.

Essential Job Duties

  • Assist firmware and test engineers with the design, development, and execution of firmware test plans.
  • Assist with developing, maintaining, and improving automated test scripts and tools, particularly using Python.
  • Support software and firmware testing to verify product functionality, performance, and reliability.
  • Assist with writing, executing, and documenting test procedures based on engineering requirements.
  • Help identify, reproduce, document, and report firmware and software defects.
  • Assist with debugging firmware and software issues under the guidance of experienced engineers.
  • Support integration testing for firmware and software across multiple teams and product platforms.
  • Assist with the development and maintenance of test fixtures, scripts, and other tools used to improve testing efficiency.
  • Apply engineering fundamentals to develop test scenarios and troubleshoot product issues.
  • Assist with analyzing test results and identifying trends, anomalies, or potential areas for improvement.
  • Gain hands-on experience with engineering test equipment, such as oscilloscopes and power analyzers.
  • Assist with investigating product and firmware performance issues and documenting findings.
  • Maintain clear and accurate documentation of test results, procedures, and engineering activities.
  • Collaborate with firmware, software, hardware, quality, and operations teams to support product development and testing.
  • Learn and navigate Badger Meter engineering systems, tools, processes, and procedures.
  • Gain familiarity with Badger Meter products and the technologies used in smart water solutions.
  • Stay current with emerging firmware, software, and automated testing technologies.
  • Perform other duties and projects as directed by the Firmware Project Engineer, Engineering Manager, or assigned mentor.

Qualifications

Currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related technical field.

Typically has completed at least 2 years of coursework toward their degree.

Experience with programming in one or more programming languages; Python and/or C preferred.

  • Basic understanding of software and firmware development concepts.
  • Basic understanding of engineering fundamentals and troubleshooting methodologies.
  • Basic understanding of testing and debugging concepts.
  • Familiarity with software development tools such as Microsoft Visual Studio is preferred.
  • Familiarity with communication protocols is preferred.
  • Basic experience or coursework involving electronic components, test equipment, or embedded systems is preferred.
  • Familiarity with automated testing concepts is preferred.
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow technical requirements and documentation.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated initiative, curiosity, and willingness to learn.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a cross-functional engineering environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
