Mechanical Engineering Intern – MRI & Robotics

Mechanical Engineering Intern – MRI & Robotics

Location: San Francisco, CA | On-site | Full-Time Internship

neuro42 is a San Francisco-based medical technology company pioneering point-of-care MRI and robotics solutions for diagnosis and interventions of neurological conditions. Our vision is to empower neurophysicians with advanced visualization and guidance technologies that enable best-in-class treatment for their patients.

We're developing a surgical robot designed to operate inside an MRI environment, where precision, reliability, and repeatability are critical. We're looking for a mechanical engineering intern who wants real hands-on work — testing electronics, embedded systems, and robotic hardware, not just observing.

What you'll do:

- Support design, development, prototyping, and testing of MRI-compatible robotic and electromechanical systems.
- Build 3D CAD models, assemblies, and detailed engineering drawings with appropriate dimensions, tolerances, and material specs — primarily in SolidWorks.
- Prepare, operate, and maintain 3D printing equipment; take printed parts from concept to finished prototype. - Assemble, integrate, and troubleshoot mechanical, pneumatic, electromechanical, and robotic systems — from small actuator assemblies to fully integrated MRI and robotic systems.
- Build and test pneumatic circuits, drive mechanisms, sensors, actuators, and motors.
- Help design structural chassis, enclosures, and mechanisms for MRI and robotic hardware.
- Evaluate materials and components for mechanical performance, manufacturability, and MRI compatibility.
- Develop and execute engineering test procedures: verification, validation, reliability, and performance testing. - Document design issues, test results, failures, and troubleshooting activities; track their resolution.
- Keep project documentation organized — CAD files, drawings, BOMs, test records, engineering notes.
- Run engineering calculations and basic analyses to back up design decisions.
- Collaborate across mechanical, electrical, and software teams during development and integration.
- Present progress, results, and technical findings to the engineering team and, when relevant, company leadership.

About you:

- Currently pursuing a Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, Mechatronics, or a related engineering field.
- Experience with 3D CAD software — SolidWorks preferred.
- Solid grasp of mechanical design principles, engineering drawings, tolerances, and manufacturing processes.
- Hands-on time with prototyping, 3D printing, machining, assembly, or lab equipment is a plus.
- Familiarity with motors, actuators, sensors, or pneumatic systems is helpful but not required.
- Genuinely interested in robotics, medical devices, MRI technology, or complex electromechanical systems.
- Sharp problem-solver with real attention to detail.
- Works well independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Clear written and verbal communicator.
- Portfolio: A personal website, online portfolio, or link showcasing previous engineering, CAD, robotics, or hands-on projects is highly encouraged and would be helpful in evaluating the candidate’s technical experience.

This internship requires at least 20 hours per week. You'll contribute directly to engineering prototypes, testing, and product development — the work is real and the stakes are real.
