Software Engineering Intern – Imaging & Systems

neuro42 is a Bay Area medical technology company developing cutting edge medical imaging and surgical robotics platform. As a Software Engineering Intern at neuro42, you will support the development, testing, and validation of software for our portable MRI system and its integration with MRI-compatible surgical robotics. You will work closely with the software and imaging engineering teams on projects spanning geometric processing pipelines, neuroimaging analysis tooling, operator-facing interfaces, and test infrastructure.

You will gain hands-on experience across the software development cycle within a regulated medical device environment, including requirements review, implementation, automated testing, verification, and documentation. The ideal candidate is a motivated undergraduate or graduate student with strong Python fundamentals, careful attention to correctness, and an interest in medical imaging, robotics, and clinical software.

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop automated test infrastructure for the imaging-to-robot coordinate pipeline, including synthetic image volumes with known geometry, round-trip transform assertions, and regression suites covering LPS and RAS orientation conventions.
  • Support validation of automated neuroimaging segmentation output, including batch execution across case sets, quantitative scoring against reference labels, and preparation of comparison reports.
  • Assist with implementation and testing of scoped features in operator-facing software used during image-guided procedures.
  • Support software maintenance activities, including identification and removal of deprecated features, unused code paths, and legacy instrumentation.
  • Develop internal tooling to normalize hardware test output and vendor specification data into structured formats for engineering review.
  • Write and maintain unit, integration, and regression tests, and support continuous integration workflows.
  • Document design decisions, test procedures, defects, and troubleshooting activities, and assist in tracking their resolution.
  • Maintain organized project documentation, including test records, engineering notes, and issue tracking in Jira.
  • Collaborate with software, imaging, hardware, and robotics engineers during development and system integration.
  • Communicate project progress, test results, and technical findings to the engineering team and, when appropriate, company leadership.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Strong proficiency in Python, including NumPy and a testing framework such as pytest.
  • Familiarity with 3D medical image formats such as NIfTI or DICOM, and with at least one of SimpleITK, nibabel, ITK-SNAP, or 3D Slicer.
  • Working knowledge of linear algebra sufficient to reason about coordinate frames and homogeneous transformations.
  • Experience with version control and collaborative development practices, including code review.
  • Exposure to GUI development in Python or TypeScript is a plus.
  • Familiarity with regulated software development standards such as IEC 62304 or ISO 13485 is a plus.
  • Interest in medical imaging, MRI technology, surgical robotics, or clinical software systems.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary engineering team.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

This internship requires at least 20 hours of work per week and provides an opportunity to gain hands-on experience developing and validating software for advanced medical imaging and robotic systems, while contributing directly to test infrastructure, tooling, and product development activities that the engineering team relies on daily.
