Literacy Leader (Part-Time, After-School)

St. Nicks Alliance | North Brooklyn | Fall 2026

Pay: $20.85/hour
Hours: Approximately 20 hours per week during the school year
Schedule: Weekday afternoons, roughly 2:00–6:00pm, plus one morning per week for professional development
Location: North Brooklyn — Williamsburg, Greenpoint, Bushwick, and Bed-Stuy school sites

St. Nicks Alliance is looking for Literacy Leaders to lead after-school literacy programming at our elementary and middle school sites across North Brooklyn.

You don't need a teaching certificate. You need experience leading groups of kids, genuine interest in literacy and youth development, and the willingness to be coached. We provide the curriculum, weekly professional development, and one-on-one instructional coaching — your job is to bring it to life for students.

This is a good fit if you're a college student or recent graduate in education, English, or psychology; a paraprofessional or teaching assistant looking for additional hours; a teaching artist; or someone considering a career in education who wants real classroom experience with real support behind it.

About St. Nicks Alliance

St. Nicks Alliance is a North Brooklyn community organization working to transform the lives of low- and moderate-income people through employment, education, housing, elder care, and social services. Our after-school programs serve children across North Brooklyn with literacy, arts, homework help, and social-emotional learning.

What you'll do

Instruction. Lead twice-weekly literacy lessons for groups of 10–20 elementary or middle school students using our internally developed curriculum. Provide targeted small-group and individual instruction incorporating Science of Reading elements and the day school's literacy techniques. Build lessons that draw on students' home culture, values, interests, and language.

Assessment. Assess student work formally and informally to determine growth and next steps. Document learning through notes, work collection, and photos. Collect literacy outcome and attitudinal data for our School Success Model research program. Keep site directors and group leaders informed about each student's strengths and challenges.

Professional development and coaching. Participate in mandatory weekly professional development and in regular coaching sessions with our Instructional Coach or Associate Director of Education. Give feedback to our curriculum writers on what's working and what isn't — Literacy Leaders genuinely shape the curriculum here.

Collaboration. Work with the school's literacy team to align our curriculum with school goals. Coordinate with the BK Story Voyager coordinator on book selection and programming. Partner with reading specialists, tutors, teaching artists, and the school's SEL transformational coach.

Safety and supervision. Follow DOHMH, OCFS, and CDC safety protocols. Stay actively engaged in supervising students across all program components — meals, transitions, outdoor play, field trips, arrival, and dismissal.

What we're looking for

• At least two years leading lessons or structured activities for groups of ten or more children
• Competency in lesson leadership — effective transitions, student engagement, clear directions
• Ability to build productive relationships with students while maintaining appropriate adult-child boundaries
• Strong self-awareness and interest in or experience with Social Emotional Learning
• Prior professional development in literacy, youth development, or teaching
• Exceptional communication skills for working with leadership, program directors, colleagues, students, parents, and school faculty
• Understanding of the strengths and challenges of our students, including familiarity with their neighborhoods, cultures, languages, and values
• Capacity to adapt in dynamic after-school environments

Helpful but not required: experience teaching project- or theme-based lessons; experience writing lesson plans with learning objectives; interest in advancing professionally in education, literacy, or child development.
