After School Program Lead | Education & Youth Development
Turn your experience working with kids into a leadership role.
The Greater Providence YMCA is looking for After School Program Leads to run engaging, high-quality programs for elementary and middle school students. This is a great opportunity for recent graduates, graduate students, educators, and emerging youth-development professionals who want hands-on experience leading a program and a team.
During the school year, you'll take the lead at one of our Before & After School sites, working directly with children while supervising staff, developing enrichment activities, connecting with families and school partners, and making sure the program runs safely and successfully each day.
What you'll actually do:
- Lead the day-to-day operation of an afterschool program
- Supervise and support a small team of youth-program staff
- Plan fun academic, enrichment, SEL, and recreational activities
- Build relationships with children, families, and school staff
- Help children develop confidence, friendships, and new skills
- Manage schedules, attendance, licensing requirements, and program records
- Coach staff and help create a positive, energetic team culture
- Plan special activities, family events, and school-vacation programming
This is a chance to gain real leadership and program-management experience early in your career. You'll be responsible for your own program site, but you'll also have the support of an experienced YMCA Youth Development team.
Who we're looking for
You don't need to have been a "manager" before. We're looking for someone who is comfortable taking the lead, loves working with kids, communicates well, and can keep a busy program organized.
Because this is a licensed childcare leadership position, candidates must be at least 21 years old and meet one of the following:
- Bachelor's degree in education, child development, human services, recreation, or a related field + at least one year of supervised experience working with school-age children in a group setting; OR
- Associate's degree in a related field + at least two years of supervised experience working with school-age children in a group setting.
Good news for students and recent grads: field placements and student teaching count toward the experience requirement.
Great fit for someone studying or starting a career in:
Education • Elementary Education • Psychology • Social Work • Human Development • Recreation • Child Development • Human Services • Youth Development
Why the Y?
You'll get experience that goes well beyond a typical part-time job: staff supervision, program planning, family engagement, behavior management, licensing and compliance, curriculum development, and day-to-day leadership.
The formal YMCA position also transitions into a leadership or instructional role during Summer Day Camp, such as a Section Director or Program Specialist, creating an opportunity for year-round youth-development experience.
Pay: $20-24/hour, based on qualifications and experience.
