AI & Automation Intern

About High Tide Logistics

High Tide Logistics is a Chicago-based transportation and logistics company that moves freight throughout the United States. We combine experienced logistics professionals with technology, data, and automation to improve how freight is priced, managed, and matched with transportation providers.

We're looking for an AI & Automation Intern who wants the opportunity to build real-world AI applications—not just observe from the sidelines.

What You'll Work On

You'll work directly with our internal software engineer and company leadership to identify, develop, test, and deploy AI and automation solutions used in our day-to-day business.

Potential projects include:

  • Building AI agents and automated workflows
  • Developing applications using large language models (LLMs) and APIs
  • Using historical transportation data to identify patterns and make recommendations
  • Developing tools to improve carrier selection and match transportation providers with freight lanes
  • Building AI-assisted pricing and decision-support tools
  • Automating repetitive sales and operational processes
  • Connecting AI tools with existing business systems and data
  • Improving internal applications already being used by our team
  • Researching and testing new AI models, platforms, and technologies
  • Identifying business processes where AI or automation can create measurable improvements

These are real business projects. Successful tools may be put into production and used by our team.

Who We're Looking For

We're interested in students studying:

  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Computer Science
  • Machine Learning
  • Data Science
  • Software Engineering
  • Computer Engineering
  • Information Systems
  • Or a related technical field

Experience with some of the following is helpful, but we don't expect an intern to know everything:

Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, SQL, APIs, LLMs, OpenAI/Anthropic/Gemini APIs, AI agents, RAG, vector databases, cloud platforms, automation tools, or modern web development.

What Matters Most to Us

We care more about what you've built and what you're capable of learning than your GPA or years of experience.

If you've built an AI application, agent, automation, website, data project, hackathon project, or something interesting just because you wanted to see if you could make it work, we want to hear about it.

We're looking for someone who is:

  • Curious about AI and emerging technology
  • Comfortable experimenting and solving problems independently
  • Excited about turning ideas into working applications
  • Interested in seeing their work used in an actual business environment
  • Willing to learn technologies they haven't used before

Why This Internship Is Different

This isn't an internship where you'll spend the semester watching presentations or doing busywork.

You'll have access to real business problems, real transportation data, an experienced internal software engineer, and company leadership that actively wants to implement new technology.

You'll have the opportunity to take an idea from problem → prototype → testing → real-world deployment.

How to Apply

Please submit your resume along with links to your GitHub, portfolio, or examples of projects you've built, if available.

Also include a short answer to:

What's one AI, automation, software, or data project you've built that you're proud of? What did you build, what technologies did you use, and what problem were you trying to solve?

We don't expect you to have all the answers. We're looking for people who enjoy figuring them out.
