Overview: 

The Spartan Orientation Staff (SOS) is a team of student leaders selected to mentor new incoming students and assist the New Student Transitions and First Year Experience (NST & FYE) staff in carrying out programming throughout the year, including:  SOAR Orientation, NAV1GATE: New Student Convocation, and other campus programs.  This position is an opportunity for students to further enhance their leadership abilities while also gaining skills that will help them to be successful in their next step—whether on campus or beyond. 

 

Role Description: 

  • Welcome new students and family members to the University during the orientation session by assisting them with the check-in process, greeting guests upon arrival, and directing participants to the appropriate location. 
  • Acquaint new students and their families with the mission, goals, policies, procedures, and resources available at UNC Greensboro. 
  • Facilitate student small groups by providing information, advice, and guidance to help students feel prepared to make a successful transition to UNCG, and acclimate them to the campus environment. 
  • Interact with students and families providing exceptional customer service, answering questions, and connecting them to campus resources and other UNCG students.  
  • Serve as a positive role model to incoming students that promotes a balanced lifestyle, emphasizing academic achievement, personal development, and involvement in co-curricular activities. 
  • Help build a sense of Spartan pride and affinity by educating students on UNCG traditions, chants, etc.  
  • Assist assigned committees, while facilitating and creating new ideas for that committee. 
  • Meet biweekly in the spring semester with assigned committee for SOAR planning and other projects. 
  • Review academic rules and regulations, scholarship requirements, registration and enrollment procedures, and how to use appropriate campus resources. 
  • Foster a positive transition to campus life for new students and their families by reducing feelings of anxiety and self-doubt by creating a comfortable atmosphere that facilitates an open exchange of information. 
  • Assist Senior Director, Associate Director, Assistant Director, Coordinators, Business & Technology Manager, Graduate Assistants, SOAR Intern(s), and other staff with various tasks. 
  • Meet all requirements outlined in terms of employment, including working all assigned hours throughout the year. 
  • Build and continue relationships with SOAR small groups throughout the academic year.  Activities include but are not limited to the following: 
    • NAV1GATE 
    • Spartan Spears
    • YFY Success Series Events
    • UNCG Athletic Welcome Events
  • Represent the University and its many campus organizations and offices in a positive and unbiased manner, regardless of personal affiliation or opinion.
  • Uphold NST & FYE values, mission and vision throughout time of employment, including but not limited to, time working directly in the SOS role.
  • Maintain and keep all information disclosed and used in the office of New Student Transitions & First Year Experience strictly confidential. Failure to maintain confidentiality may result in disciplinary action including, but not limited to, termination of employment.
  • Other duties as assigned by NST & FYE Staff.
